Nice. Hope you'll like it.
Important tip. When you get around the Level 25 - 30 area, make sure that Phan is leveled up much and that his weapons are sharpened.

Better tip, keep Pahn with you as much as possible and keep his weapons up to the MAX of what the nlacksmiths allow you at the time, I think it is weapon lvl 9.

Agreed Pahn should always be with as much as you can. Without a guide you can get about 107 stars on your own, there's one that I guarantee you won't be able to find on your own because it has to deal with going back into a midway dungeon late in the game, there's no reason you would normally go back to the dungeon. It's the magician Crowley and you don't need to worry about him for awhile.
However, unlike other Suikodens which require very different requirements, Suikoden 1's attainment of 108 stars is pretty straightforward

Several characters are at odd places, such as Crowley. What about Pesmerga? Clive is a pain in the butt to get, as he appears random.

when you get the storage person, i think you can unequip everyone you don't use [or hardly ever will], so you can sell their stuff.

I made it to the second imperial General's territory, and I currently have Tir, Gremio, Flik, Viktor, Pahn, and Kai on my team. Right now, it's becoming too difficult to keep up with the money demands of my party, but this game has been amazing so far--old-school at it's best.
If anyone knows of any easy ways to make a LOT of money in this game, please let me know. =p

if you've recruited the dice player (Gaspar in Kaku), play the dice game. you can easliy amass a fortune... or like i said, unequip people you don't use- and sell their equipment.

Gaspar is your source of income. While playing Chinchorin against Tai Ho, it can be pretty difficult, as Tai Ho is a good gambler.
Gaspar sucks and loses all the time. Also, you can bet on your winnings, doubling your amount, if you keep doing that, you'll get 99999 in no time. Unfortunatly they removed that trick in Suikoden II, but a diffirent trick arose =P. Dragon Armor glitch hurrah =D.

Ah, Gaspar.
He's probably half the reason why this Suikoden is still my favourite so far.

I know it's not an "easy way", but if you take the time to level, it will always make the game much easier.
Also, you can never have too much money. Some of the later sharpenings can get extremely expensive, so to save some money for that would be very helpful. Don't try and level up every character that you get as you don't really need them. Pick a select group and stay with them throughout most of the game.
Pesmerga
May 6 2008, 05:08 PM
I don't know where Gaspar gets all the money from he looses to you though. I mean, I always got 999999 from him with little effort.
Would be better if he would just give it to me xD.
No seriously, you're only way of getting easy money within a few minutes is Gaspar. He is wealthy and doesn't understand Chinchorin and you do, so you beat him.
Even if you loose, just go again, or save in between, it doesn't matter. Boo to leveling and earning money, way too slow.
Gaspar is the money guru in Suikoden I.

For quick money extremely early in the game (as soon as you're able to leave Gregminster), give Marco a try over in Rockland. I was reminded in my current playthrough that his cup-swapping game actually follows the same pattern every time (or at least up to a certain number of turns). I guess it's a bit late to mention this, but I guess for future reference...
Off the top of my head, it's the right cup, then the center... Can't remember past that, though. You can just play those two turns, then quit and talk to him again, though, and it'll reset to the right cup. Best way to build cash before leaving Gregminster, as far as I know.
As for gameplay help, I just got up to the point when Liukan is taken to Soniere, so feel free to ask me about whatever. I should be able to help, since I'm around the same point as you now, so it's fresh in my memory. ^^;

I finished the game 9 times and guided Bubble through the game mostly out of the top of my head, so I think I can answer most questions you have =P.
Of course there are other members as well that can do that just as good =).
The Marco trick never seemed to work for me though. I tried it several times, but I never got it to work.
Not that it matters, because as soon as you get Gaspar, you'll money problems are over.
One thing I do remember that I found highly annoying was in Lepant his mansion, at the end, where you had to stand on a mechanism that would spin round. There was only a small exit and most other things were fighting monsters. Really annoying, as the monsters were dealing decent damage and chances are small that you would actually hit the exit. Though I had it happen twice to me that I got the exit on the first spin.

Just a random thing I thought I'd throw in here: When you recruit Tengaar, give 'er a try sometime. Unlike Hix (who is, for the most part, inferior to most other physical attackers), Tengaar's actually a pretty useful character, with a pretty nice Magic stat right from the start (pretty sure she's got a fourth-level spell upon recruiting her, and gets up to three of them in a short time), and she's a decent long-range character to boot, so she can add in some physical damage if you don't feel the need to cast a spell with her. My first time through the game, she was in my party up 'til the end of the game.
Actually, on that note, Rubi is quite worth checking out as well. He's a bit stronger (physically) than Tengaar, while maintaining a long-range attack, though his Magic isn't too much lower than hers, so he's pretty well-balanced overall. (Though I did notice he's got a terribly low Luck stat, so probably not many critical hits, haha.)

Argh, just started playing Suikoden 1 for the first time, and I'm kinda worried about not finding all 108 stars. I heard Crowley is specially hard to find.
Pesmerga
May 21 2008, 04:22 AM
Here are some stars you'll most likely fail to find, unless using a guide:
Crowley, Clive, Pesmerga, Mace and Vincent.
Nash
May 21 2008, 05:17 AM
Vincent and Pesmerga can be missed if you are the type that don't revisit dungeons for no reason.

Though, the Old Books in the game do give clues to all the more tricky characters, so it's not like you are without a lead when you don't play by a guide.

Hmm, so every cave is worth going through again? Because I just felt smart by going through the cave with the Ant Queen or whatever and the bandits, in hope of finding a star, but no!
I lucked out with the coin-bet-thing in Rockland. I bet 10k like 5 times and got lucky each time!
Pesmerga
May 21 2008, 09:49 AM
Nope, there are only a few dungeons that you need to revisit.
Pesmerga you'll find in Neclord's castle and will only join you, once you have 101 characters, if I recall correct.
The same goes for Crowley, but you'll find him in the cave behind Qlon Temple, however, it is a hidden passage and therefore you cannot directly see where you have to enter, I advise a guide for this.
Mace is another character that you need to revisit a dungeon, this time it is Crystal Cove (or whatever that place was called) and you need to bring all the blacksmiths with you and there is only 1 chance of getting him, I believe and you need 101 characters, I think, so again, use a guide.
Vincent can be found in a prison cell where you have to free Viktor, forgot the name. Anyway, once you have cleared that dungeon, go back in again and free Vincent.
Clive is just a pain in the butt, as he appears RANDOM in a town called Rikon. So, keep walking in and out of town and check the liquor store/inn.

I don't think spoilers are needed, since pretty much everyone around here (or at least those who pay enough attention to the Suikoden series) played the first game. In anycase, I haven't picked mine up for ages, been meaning to play it again but getting all 108 stars is a pain the arse. Plus don't have SII, so there isn't any motivation for me to get that flag data. Plus the interraction between Flik and Viktor weren't as developed as the 2nd game, and very few characters actually caught my attention during the game. Though I loved playing through it, after three to five playthroughs I got tired of the game. Hopefully you won't follow in my example.

Argh, can't seem to find the perfect faq for finding all 107 stars. I'm not gonna spend hours trying to find everyone either, as it probably doesnt matter THAT much. If anyone know of a really good guide/faq on the internet, do point me in the right direction.

It is your gamer Bible.
Soul_Taker_Devil, please keep in mind that Suikoden wasn't anything more than a simple try at the RPG genre for Konami.
Of course the story isn't as developed as Suikoden II, the interaction between character is less and overall, the game is less as well. It is, however, a good game, even better if you play Suikoden II.

If you want a guide that's more chronological based, might want to check out Suikosource.com
Oh, apart from Mace, you might want to be careful with Leon Silverberg as well. It's easy to get screwed out of an opportunity to get him if you proceed too fast with the story.

Argh, 5-6 hours into the game (just before you throw dice with that guy with the funny name) after a visit to Mathiu, I managed to trip on the wire to the controller, resulting in my PS2 to fall to the floor JUST while I was saving. So, in other words, save file got corrupt and I started playing FF6
