Hey, I was thinking about it, what happened to people making original movies???

There's only a few coming out now, it seems that everything was made like 20 years ago, and they're just adding cool special effects. (nothing against movies such as Indiana Jones, Narnia, etc. It's just that they're not "new")

I think we're at the age now where stuff like Narnia, Iron Man, Transformers, etc. can actually have a live-action movie deserving of the name. I mean the only way you could get away with something like Transformers 10 years ago without making it look like uber-crap is cartoon form. (Making it like Power Rangers would have KILLED it.)

I wish that there would be a balance between old ideas and new ideas. I mean, I heard that:

A. They're making ANOTHER HULK movie. (Basically nothing new, just making the crappy first one better)
B. They're making another X-files movie. (hasn't that been buried for like 5 years at least by now???)
- Note: I know there are the sub-culture peoples who still love it, but for goodness sakes, that hasn't been on TV for like years now.
C. They're making a Sex and the City movie (barf)
D. THEY"RE MAKING ANOTHER HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT DA CRAP!!!! (somebody shoot them...)

That's my rant.

well first off and i might get blasted for this, i like the High School Musicial movies so i am glad for another one, there shoot me if you want but i do.

secondly, the new hulk should be good, its got Edward Norton not Eric "i suck nuts" Bana.

thirdly, its got to be tuff because almost every idea has been used in a movie before, so new ideas have to be hard to come by at times, but it does seem like right now there is a huge movement of remakes, but that isnt so much a bad thing.

1. To each his own I guess.
2. Eric Bana isn't a bad actor, but I think having the way how the movie was directed was just stupid (it pretty much went through every scene like a comic book. If I wanted a comic book I'd have bought one rather than buy a movie ticket to watch one.) As for Ed Norton, pure freaking genius on the casting call.
3. It's Hollywood, what can we say, hardly anything original ever comes out nowadays.

A. The new Hulk movie will be great. It's friggin Edward Norton. Fight Club, American History X guy. Has this guy gone wrong?
B. X Files is great. Don't knock movies made out of tv serials that no longer run, because they're godsend. 3 years after Firefly, we got Serenity, and how in the hell was that bad? X Files was also, like, an amazing show. Honestly, more of it does no one any harm.
C. LOL xD. But don't watch it if it doesn't interest you. That's how simple it is to make your contribution to stop sequels.
D. Look above.

There's plenty of original movies. Sometimes they don't jump out at you. Cloverfield certainly helped the formula that Blair Witch oh so sloppily created (and Diary of the Dead certainly did its part in furthering the style), and people knocked it because of blahblahblah boring. Memento came out in 2000, and if that wasn't original, I'm not sure what is. TONS of indie films try original stuff (though tons of them also suck). If you want something hilariously out of the ordinary, and winning bonus points for having Bruce Campbell as the main character, watch Bubba Ho Tep, mummy movie where an seventy something penis cancer Elvis and a black dude who thinks he's JFK have to save a retirement home from being killed by the mummy. Liked it or not, Beowulf and Sin City, and 300, all of these movies did their part in doing something new with a movie's visuals, nevermind all of them involved nothing but greenscreen.

So calm the ##### down and go actually look for original movies rather than just look at the coming soons. And even then: I think Hancock will pretty much give a different view of superheroes, and seeing as Smith has been pretty much proving that he's an excellent actor, this movie might end up as nothing less than comedy gold.
The Evil Dead
I agree to some extent but you can only be original for so long, and Hollywood likes bank. As long as things continue to bank ( Even movies that you think might dud may take because of the budget ) you will continue to see this trend.

I see where you're coming from, but I'll take Evil Dead 4. smile.gif

Also there are still plenty of originals in theaters, and sometimes the theater isn't always the best way to go for movies. You can find a lot of indies and direct to video flicks that are decently produced and original at a decent video store.

Well, a few movies that I consider to be original, in the way they have been set up, storyline wise, or just general are:

- Pan's Labyrinth
- [REC]
- Stardust
- Cloverfield
- Street Kings
- Vantage Point

Now, the first two are Spanish films and they have clearly showed me, that they are good at making movies. Pan's Labyrinth is a very good and original movie, with a pretty interesting storyline. Considering it is rated 15, it does contain some blood as well, however, it isn't a lot.

[REC] is going to be my horror movie of the year, even though it was released not too long ago in England. I do not care that the design is like Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, the story isn't original either, but for a horror movie, that is your typical zombie flick, to be recorded like the Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, in a movie that is pretty much tense throughout the entire movie, is something I had not seen before.
Almost every critic gave a positive review and I consider this to be one of the best horror movies I have seen. Ju-On and the Descent had my favourite spots, but they have been beaten by [REC].

Stardust is a fantasy movie, like Pan's Labyrinth, but not as gruesome. It is more like a fairytale, lots of magic is involved, dashing princes, princesses and a whole magical kingdom.
However, the good acting, story and overall very good design makes this a very enjoyable movie. I cannot find one thing about this movie, that I didn't like.

Cloverfield, many people disliked it, also many people loved it. I am in the latter group. It is basically the same, as in [REC], but this time it is a monster movie, if you weren't aware already.
I love the style it was recorded, because it brings so much more tensity and realism into a movie, than you get with professional camerawork. This is a good watch, no denying that.

Street Kings is a movie I enjoyed as well. The storyline is pretty good in my opinion, it has many actors I like (Forest Whitaker for example) and there are a few surprises as well.
Of course, the whole drugs/cops/corruption thing has been done before, but I still enjoyed this movie.

Vantage Point is original, due to the fact that it takes short moments of 8 perspectives. You'll see the same sequence from 8 different points of view, which is a very interesting concept and works good in this movie. Once you have seen the eight perspectives, the story ties the ends of all 8 points together, in a rather good scene, with a very good car chase.

So, these are movies I have seen in the last few weeks/months, that I consider original/good.

also some great original movies are

The I Inside and Stay..

I agree with everyone is saying about The Incredible Hulk, Edward Norton is a hell of an actor leading a good cast in Tim Roth and William Hurt (and a cameo from Iron Man himself Robert Downey Junior), I don't see why it has to be a sh!t movie just because the last one wasn't too great.

TED also hit the nail on the head in recommending checking out the Indie films. I'd also recommend checking out some foreign movies like Pans Labyrinth(like Pes said), Tell No One, City Of God, Bullet Boy, The Scorpian(f*cking awesome MMA film) to name a few.

City Of God

Yes yes yes. Such a great movie. One of my favorites. I was so surprised to find out it was based on real events.

The Hulk was a really good movie. It's not only action packed, but psychological as well. Although I like Edward more than Eric, I still don't like when they change actors. It's the worst thing when it comes to sequels.

And about original movies...maybe Cloverfield, but it somehow reminds of Godzilla. Only it's somehow "darker" and more horror-based, and it's made in "first person".

first off i dont believe this is a sequel, i think this is a remake .. a much needed remake seeing as how the first movie was just flat out AWFUL.. honestly though i would have let the series die with that abomination of a movie they brought to the movie screens staring Eric OMG BANA!!!!
Manc
I don't watch movies that often to tell (or care, I keep to anime) but these remakes like transformers... are bad!

I admit it is a great movie, but nowhere the Transformes I know from the old classic 80's cartoon.
like Prime's blue flames... seriusly WTF (and I usually never use such abbreviation) and what happened to bumblebee's beetle and megatron... that isn't megatron!!!!

I will accept the way they transform but I still prefer the old cartoons way!

and most impotant they don't act as their original, I almost threw up when the autobots where presented!

Hollywood is destroying classics with their moneygrabbing!

It's not exactly a remake apparently.

From what I read of Empire magazine on an interview with the... the director (I think it was). It's supposed to somewhat carry off from the first movie but also having it's own story etc... Anyways, it looks better than the first one, I'll give you that though, I haven't seen the first one yet. CG and action-wise it's supposed to be better.

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

As for the other movies mentioned. I am SO seeing Sex and the City ;D I've read enough interviews to know why it took so long to come out and the decision to make it ;P. High school musical, techinically don't care and the target audience is mainly for 4 and up. And I don't watch X-Files ;P

I hate Sex and the City. Most horrible project ever and it only shows, because there is the movie.
If my gf ever turns out like any of those women in the show, she is in deep, deep trouble.
Theferrell
@ Pes: Thank goodness I'm not the only person who hates that concept of a movie...

Ok, I do now get that there are good movies that are original stories out. (Stardust and Vantage Point (although MUCH like 24 on steroids) are two of my FAVORITE movies to date.) My rant was that the original idea movies are the ones that do not get much hype. I mean, yay, we have good graphics and can make old stuff look shiny, but come on. You have to give the ones who are original their dues. Maybe this trend may have happened because of the writers strike making people with original ideas not want to write movies.... but let's hope that it will get better in the future.

Lol! What's wrong with Eric Bana? I don't understand why Eric Bana gets slated by some people. I mean the guy can act pretty damn well any if anyone disagrees they should check out a film called Chopper not one of my favourites but his performance was fantastic. Admittedly a lot of his latest performances seem to fall into the category of quiet and brooding in some way or another but the guy can act.
