The Dreamers
Hundreds of people across the world have succumbed to a mysterious sleeping sickness. Numbers aren't big enough to make headlines, but the condition has baffled medical science. No cancer, no trauma, no known disease. Even exorcisms have been performed upon the unfortunate, to no avail. Doctors have simply dismissed it as an anomaly, moved on to more newsworthy causes, and the victims have been left, in carehomes, hospitals and hospices across the world.
In the seven realms of Dream, there grows a shadow, a rot, a piece of void, unsettling to both denizens of the Dream and to those mortals sensitive to such things. Even some otherwise oblivious people are starting to feel its effects, waking up in cold sweats in the small hours of the morning with recollections of some horrible, intangible nightmare.
These events have even attracted the attention of some supernatural forces, fearing the eventual destruction of mankind, most with interest in stopping the phenomena, and most unwilling to stray from their own sphere of influence and into the malleable and evershifting realms of Dream, instead sending proxies or agents to investigate.
Settings
The Real- As modern day earth, more or less. It's not generally accepted or visible, but the supernatural is very real. Witches and spirit doctors walk among other mortals, though few possess even an inkling of true power. Those that do tend to keep it quiet to avoid attracting attention from supernaturals or impromtu assassination attempts. Denizens of the Real can be witches, mediums, sensitives such as artists, drug users or poets, or even mythological human heroes that have attained some vestige of immortality. They can even be accountants or pharmacists, ordinary people whose lives have been touched somehow by the Shadow.
The Dream- The realm of dream is malleable, chaotic, and intrinsically unstable. Normally each dreamer enters their dream alone, but some can manifest psychic powers in order to contact another already sleeping, or enter another's dream. There are few constant points in the realm, of the known points are the seven Gates (representing transition to different psychological states within the dream, among them Delusion and Forgotten Love, though again the names themselves are malleable), the Fortress and the Garden. Mortals of a powerful mindset may impose a shape of their own design upon certain points of the dream. Denizens of the Dream may be dreams or nightmares themselves, fictional characters or characters from dreams memorable enough to have escaped the dream in which they were created and taken on a form of their own.
The Other- Above and beyond the fringes of swirling colour that border the Dream if you walk far enough is the realm of the mourning toads. Huge toads sit on clouds with tears dripping from their eyes, in turn becoming cloud, in turn becoming rain. In time, the toads themselves become little more than mist, and float away, even as more toads are condensed from the cloud. No-one knows why the toads are there, or why they are sad. Once thought to be part of the Dream proper, the realm of the Mourning Toads marks the borderland between the Dream and other unreal places, collectively referred to as "The Other" The Other includes various incarnations of heaven, hell, the underworld and fairy realms. It is said that at points the realm of mourning toads overlaps with the Real. It is the domain of the angel Sahaquiel, and it is where the Shadow was first spotted.
Character template
Characters can be supernatural or mundane, introverted or loquacious, sociopaths or prophets. Just remember that the point isn't to win the game. The point is to enjoy playing your character, exploring who they are, who the others are, and advancing the story. That you have spiffy powers is spiffy, but incidental.
Name:
Alias: (If any)
Appearance: (Include how the character sounds, if appropriate)
*Place of origin:
*Allegiance:
*Motivation:
*Powers: (List up to three things that your character can do the best. Make them fairly specific with sensible limits, i.e. "Stuart can see through up to six inches of lead using his magic eye powers when he concentrates" and "Stuart is a doctor and so is good at diagnosing ill people", rather than "Stuart is omniscient, Stuart can control time, Stuart knows lots of science" People can be immune to age, but no-one is completely unkillable.)
*Biography: (As brief or detailed as you feel like)
Those fields marked with a star, you may pm to me or post these in a darker colour if you would rather other players not read them. Once your profile is approved, I will pm you with any extra information you request or would know in character.
I expect IC posts to be a paragraph or longer, with the exception of when you are in dialogue/interaction with another character and awaiting reaction. (dialogue can be hard to pad out)
I will be playing (assuming this gets off the ground, haha), and posting/pming tasty plot development stuffs at appropriate intervals.
Any questions?

And here's my character
Name: Dr William Arthur Gengle
Aliases: The Guy In The Know, Doc, Bill
Appearance: Aged academic, smelling faintly of woodsmoke and lavender. For the most part bald, remaining hair distincly grey, with prominently bushy eyebrows and a small beard. He is of average height and slightly rotund. His voice is a tenor ruined by cigarettes.
Place of origin: Poland, the Real
Allegiance: Mankind
Motivation: Academic curiosity
Powers: Intuition, an uncanny knack of gaugeing people, their motivations, and what they're about to do. Mathematics, he's good at it, nuff said. Contact, when it comes to matters of the collective unconscious, he's the man in the know. The american government keeps him on call, and even the elusive dream-thieves' guild keeps him on call.
Biography: A child prodigee, son of Christov and Ana Gengle, immigrants from Poland who migrated to America near the end of WW2. He was consistantly good at mathematics through school, though he surprised his family and his teachers when he chose to study History and Anthropology at university. He went on to a doctorate, working several jobs all the while as his father had refused to lend him money.
When his first paper was published, it was the talk of the academic community, as such theories were then in vogue, and he received funding for his research into budding subcultures. It was during this period of his life that he met his future wife, Nina MacCaolite, a journalist from California. He went on to write more papers, and his first book, "Of Man's Soul" (Which many found too dry and clinical for its subject matter) and served a brief period as a psychologist.
He married Nina MacCaolite in 1973, and they had two children together, Lucille and Theodore.
In 1978, he published his second book "The nature of the dream" a work which would ultimately derided as LSD influenced new age claptrap. Unfortunately, he had touched upon some important truths. Over the following years, he was arrested several times and underwent questioning by the state, though he was never charged with any offense.
His wife Nina left him in 1981, and was awarded custody of their two children.
Gengle became depressed, and vanished for the better part of two decades, only to be found alive and well in Marrakesh with a retinue of servants. He is suspected to have worked for the secret service during this time, but has never confirmed this theory. His ex-wife, Nina, threatened to sue for non-payment of child support, but this was settled out of court.
Currently, Dr Gengle lives alone in his sizeable appartments in London, occasionally travelling to his homes in London and Los Angeles. He is said to be working on a new book.
We'll start once we have four

(Ok, I have read this RP OOC many a time's and will assume this attempt at a character the best to my ability.)
Name: Letum (Latin for death, ruin, annihilation)
Alias: Buzz, Ruin
Appearance: Buzz stands at 5'10" tall. Long brown hair meets his shoulders and he is very slender. Long arms and legs with a deep tan and leather skin. His eyes are amber yellow with a hint of mourning orange. Stern strong facial features. His voice is deep and troubled with bass, so deep in fact that he talks a loud wisper when regularly speaking.
Place of origin: Unknown, The Dream.
Allegiance: The Dream
Motivation: Destruction of human will and the spread of this vast and unknown anomly.
Powers: Manifestation - Buzz can manifest figments or structures, personality's and even in some case's persuade human will in his dreams. He can also fabricate dreams and impliment them into another's sleep realm, causing brash and irrational settings, populated by hatred, bloodlust, and destruction.
Mind Threading - Buzz can essentially leap through the dreams of the already sleeping victims to the unexplainable anomly. Essentially using these minds as mental subways to the minds yet unaffected, buzz then enters the dreams of the unaffected. This ability is much like a spindaling spider web of mental disarry to most, but serves to buzz as a mental road map to the dreams and nightmares of millions.
Haunting - Mental traces of instilled nightmares from Buzz's Manifestastion ability that continue to persuade and or haunt the dreamer. This vision's, preminision's, and even in some case's severed and controlled fragments of will power can strike the victim both when sleeping or awake. These traces hide in the human subconcious and are virtually impossible to find.
Biography: Buzz is a Nightmare manifestation of the dream. One of the first children to fall victim to the dreams anomly Letum or Ruin took upon his victims body and essentially crossed from The realm of the Dream to the Realm of The Real. In the realm of the real Ruin can more easily thread his mind bending nightmares and comma enducing will manifestastions upon The unaffect real.

Name: Aaron Sean Hayes
Aliases: Sean, Ash
Appearance: A young man, mid-twenties, tall with short, dark, sandy-brown hair. Has a short, trimmed beard, and green eyes. Of average build, he frequently looks tired and drawn, with his hair unkempt. He tends to dress in casual, easy clothes - t-shirts and jeans, and a pair of work boots.
Place of origin: Ireland, the Real

Motivation: Personal understanding
Powers: Insomniac transcendence: The ability to enter and interact with the dream world while still concious in the real world. The dream world will take on roughly the same visual appearance as the real world setting sean currently finds himself in.
Transcendent interaction: The ability to perform unnatural physical feats whilst in a state of insomniac transcendence - in short, the nature of dreams allows one to, for example, jump 8 feet in the air, or run up a wall... this action, when performed in the dream world, will equate to an equal action in the real world (to an extent).
Thief: Pretty self explanitory... lock-picking, sneaking, pick-pocketing, deception...

Name: Groom
Alias: Shapeless one
Appearance: He has no real appearance, and can take on any shape he so desires. His favorite however, is that of a Wolf that walks like a man, and has humanish paws. Stands at 6'2" and weighs about 160lbs. He wears the same kind of shorts, and no shoes, or shirt. His eyes are always a shade of pink. He has a very weak sounding voice regularly, and he walks slouched over. He is not very intimidating, and appears, meaning the way he moves, very weak.

He has found a way to travel through the other realms at his own free will, and takes full advantage of it. His favorite realm is the Real realm. There he has met a girl by the name of Sylvia. He has fallen for her. Other worldly creatures have always fascinated him, but like her. From what she has tought him, and what he learned himself. He has just as much knowledge as you average man, and much more than that. He has knowledge of a few of the realms, but he as caring for them as he is for the real worlds history and ways.

Okay this is interesting!
Name: Blaine Lussox
Alias: ∞ - Signature on artwork, goes by Infinity
Appearance: Blaine stands about 5' 8" tall with spiked hair dyed black at the roots, brown in the middle, and orange at the tips. His hazel eyes are covered half of the time by clear skiing goggles, which have faint outlines of cleaned-off paint. He has a chisled jawline which makes his face looks as if he has either not eaten in weeks, or gone without sleep for many weeks, both of which is true to some extent. He can noramlly be seen wearing green overalls with the top portion unbuttoned and hanging down. He wears
THIS TEE-SHIRT underneath. The face on the shirt appears to be smudged in paint. Both the shirt and overalls has splatters of paint across them in multiple different colors. His shoes are regualr white sneakers with multiple scuff on them, as well as paints stains. His voice is that of a man who sounds as if he has not spoken in ages. A very dry, rough baritone which comes out in breathy segments.
Place of origin: London, England; the Real
Allegiance: Humanity
Motivation: Freedom from the Dream
Powers: Art-Form - Blaine can draw an object in the Dream and it comes to life. He can create animate or inanimate objects, depending on what symbol he draws on the object. However, once the symbol is marred, the object dissipates back into nothingness.
Somniphrenia - Blaine gets glimpses of the dream world while awake. However, this is only when he is very tired or about to enter the Dream. He normally draws or paints what he sees then, otherwise he never remembers what he saw. However, in this state, he will slip into the Dream unless someone wakes him.
Being a starving artist, Blaine has many connections in the Real. However, these connections range from the reputable art dealer to the repugnant drug dealer.
Biography: When Blaine left college, he graduated in the middle of his class with an art major. However, he also left college with a drug addiction. This ate away at him until he found a way to make the drugs work for him. He is known to create many trippy artworks, many of which are on display in certain art galleries. Noone knows how he gets the inspiration for these except for the dealers which sold him the drugs he was on while he painted them. Blaine finally overdosed on drugs one night and nearly died. This made him realize that he needed to quit, and he began to try to quit cold turkey. However, it was only for a short amount of time before he began to slip into the Dream. His first experience with this was one with an impact. This is what he saw...
Blaine falls asleep and wakes up in nothingness. He floats about, trying to make sense of things. Suddenly, an explosion of light and color surrounds him, enveloping him in what seems to be a drug-induced trip. However, even though it appears to be good, shadows infest this realm. It slowly evelops the color, turning it all back into nothingness. Suddenly Blaine feels a tug at pant leg, and he pulls away in fright. Next it felt as if something grabbed ahold of the back of his shirt, trying to pull him back. Blaine spun around and smacked the hand off, then finding the ability to run away instead of float. Blaine ran for what seemed to be a long distance, Blaine stopped, unable to see anything or feel anything grabbing or clinging to him. Suddenly, a create appeared in front of him with a blood-curdling screech. It was visible only because it was darker than the pitch-black darkness around him. This creature had no form, and suddenly wrapped large, murky hands around his neck, cutting off his air.
Blaine woke up in a gasp for air and a half yell, sweating buckets of ice. It has been only about a week since then, and Blaine has barely had any rest since then. Every so often he gets glimpses of things, quickly draws them in his half-asleep stupor, then falls off to the dream, quickly waking in a start. He is beginning to loose his sanity and desires nothing more than to rid himself of these nightmares.
EDIT: SPelling and grammar!
This RP reminds me of a book.
Really, the book and the RP have very little in common but...
It's about a dream... THE Dream. And The main character is a girl.
Other than that I can't remember much.
If you know it, let me know.
Also, I'll have my profile up tomorrow sometime.
This RP looks really good. Though I wish I could get a little of a plot from it.
To be honest, I'm a little confused at where to start and what to do.
EDIT: I decided against sleep. I really want to do up my profile.
Name: Von Groms
Alias: None
Appearance: Being a strong willed denizen of the dream, Von is able to change his appearence though not much of The Dream around him. His natural form stands approx. 6' with a very average white skin tone. He has light brown wavy hair and long, pointed ears. Atop both ears is a small tuft of fur. His eyebrows are bushy as is his mustache. Both eyes are entirely white (though he can see just fine), a trait he normally keeps changed for it stands out in a crowd.
Place of origin: Unknown dream of an unknown someone from The Real; Dripped into the Dream.
Allegiance: Chaotic Lord Rom
Motivation: Sent on a reconnaissance mission to discover more about the Shadow, it's usefulness and its dangers to the Chaotic Lord.
Powers: Von has mastered his appearance beyond most people, within or outside the Dream. Some think his potential comes from being born so close to the edge of the Dream. With a little concentration Von can begin to change himself. The more he changes, the more concentration he requires. Though Von has more or less perfected his art it takes much to break his concentration. When wearing a completely different visage Von can hold his concentration under almost any stress short of being knocked out. ALMOST any stress. When just changing minor aspects, Von can usually hold the changes even unconscious, a sign of his great potential at disguise. Von has never tried changing himself to something other than human but has often wondered how far his boundaries reach.
Von is also very inept socially and extremely charismatic. He has a way of coaxing that little bit of information you didn't mean to share. He also has a way of asking the simplest of questions and getting the most useful of answers, allowing him to not be remembered well and still learn what he needs to.
Von's third great talent is his ability to slide from the Dream into others dreams. Only the most sensitive of people. A teenager named Josh was the first he came in contact with. Josh was a big Psilocybin Mushroom user. The large amounts of Psilocybin trapped in his bloodstream helps move him closer towards the Dream. Von's hope is to help Josh enter the Dream at will. There's always use for an outside informant.
(Perhaps Von has made contact with Dr Gengle?)
Biography: Von's earliest memory is sobbing. No light, no darkness, just nothingness everywhere and sobbing. Then even the sobbing ceased. Eternities past. Until Von dripped --there was no other way to describe the feeling, at one point there was nothing and then the next he was gathering and solidifying until he dripped and landed atop a hill in a field near the edge of Dream. Alone and with no memory at all Von deducted that his first task must be to uncover more of his past. Traveling the vast world of Dream, Von was set to gathering information of where he may have came from. Knowing that usually, people don't just 'drip' into existence, Von thought it best to keep his origin quiet while searching. Suddenly, he was gathering information from people without letting on much of himself. Soon he decided, he must have come from a dream. Not The Dream but A dream. The sobbing must have been part of that.
The majority of Von's time was spent amongst people, learning everything he could about this place and its limitations. Soon Von was learning he could change his appearance and occasionally things around him. Though he tried to develop both skills, Von excelled in changing his appearance and eventually gave up on changing the dream around him. The ability to "become" someone new entirely thrilled Von to no end and eventually led to him heading back the where he entered the Dream.
The next several years were spent in solitude, training his mind to concentrate and never let go of the changes. Though Von never quite reached perfection, he was never able to permanently recreate himself. His ability did go far beyond average though. Minor changes could be kept even while Von slept and major ones seemed to be able to stay with everything short of. Feeling he could excel no further, Von decided his skills needed a test in civilization.
Once among humanity again Von went about changing himself and occasionally using his skill for some fun. Avoiding the consequences of his unruly behavior was easy. Simply duck around a corner and become someone new. Unfortunately, Von met his match when he was knocked in the back of the head with a stool before he could escape a more "sensitive" man than most after insulting his wife. Though the impact didn't knock Von out it sent him slamming to the ground. He felt his head crash against the floor and his disguise vanish. After taking a sufficient beating Von left town and heading once more to where he entered the Dream. Cursing his foolishness and cursing his imperfection of his art, Von wandered further than he meant to, sliding into the Realm of the Mourning Toads and crossing far beyond before realizing what he'd done.
Amongst a land of Chaos, Von attempted to head back the way he came but found every way looked the same. Suddenly, a voice proclaimed to him that his ability had been observed and admired and that his ending in this Choatic realm was no accident. the Chaotic Lord Rom had taken an interest in Von and planned to use him as a spy in exchange for training in the art of deception. Three years spent in the Chaotic Realm training his body and mind. It was during these three years that Von learned to enter dreams from people of the Real. The next year and a half were spent investigating heavens, hells and the rest of the Other. While giving a more or less useless report to Rom he was informed that his next mission would take him away from the Other and back to The Dream. The situation was explained and his objective made clear. Investigate the Shadow's uses and dangers, let no one know who you are or why you're there. Messages will be sent to tell who to report to and when. And lastly, use anyone who knows much but dispose of those who know TOO much.

Name: Risako
Appearance: Artificially lightened brown hair, average height and weight. Often looks gaunt and tired, and when one looks in her dull eyes, they cannot typically tell if she is aware or not. Sometimes she wears eye shadow, but other days she can go without and there is not visible difference. She often wears trendy clothing, but there is always a careless casual aspect to the way it is thrown on her.
Place of origin: Birmingham, England, the Real
Allegiance: None
Motivation: Boredom in the Real.
Powers:
Transpiration: Risako can pass various small objects from the Real to the Dream, and to a certain extent, vice versa.
Auditory: Risako can feel sounds, especially music. Music constantly drones through her head in the Real, and in the Dream she can use it to communicate feelings and ideas like most use words.
Ellis: Who knows what Ellis is? Perhaps he is one of Risako’s abilities, her subconscious, her true self. Perhaps he is just a manifestation of herself… But then again, maybe he is not. It is quite possible that Ellis is indeed a separate individual altogether. But for now, let’s consider him one of Risako’s abilities.
Biography:
Risako is bored. She was bored. As far as she knew, she would always be bored. She was bored before school, growing up with her mother on the cold, rural island of Hokkaido. She was bored at her mother’s funeral, when she was seven. Though she may have felt some remorse, it was far overshadowed by boredom. She was bored when none of her relatives wanted her, and was bored on the plane ride to Britain and her eccentric cousin who lived there. This boredom continued.
In secondary school, Risako developed… Physically and mentally. Before she received her O levels, she was being scouted by modeling companies, and she eventually began her career as a model. It bored her. On the other hand, she began to experience the Dream. It was occasional at first, but after a while, she would enter it almost daily. In the Dream, she met Ellis. She did not really know anything about Ellis, but he seemed to know all about her. She quickly became infatuated with Ellis, though it was never clear if he reciprocated her feelings. He seemed highly advanced in his understanding of the Dream, and possessed what appeared to Risako to be the ability to do anything he wanted.
In the Real, Risako aged, and her life progressed, but she didn't really follow it. Risako in the Real became more of a shell, existing only as a vessel for Risako of the Dream. She got older and could no longer model, so she went on welfare like so many others, but it did not matter one bit to her.
Risako now exists only for Ellis. Who or what he is, however, is unknown.
EDIT: I guess that's it... I'd kind of like to add more, but I forgot whatever it was that I was going to put in.

Jul 9 2008, 12:51 AM
Name: Rethlon
Appearance: dark brown hair in long shoulder length drealocks, usually wears large mirrored aviator glasses. stands 6' 0" tall, with a slight slouch to the way he stands. Shares the physique of an athlete, though moves clumsily and slowly almost as if drunk all the time. His face is hard but his deep brown eyes are gentle and warm. He wears a rugged yet aged, long, brown leather jacket that is riddled with pockets inside. He wears various brightly coloured shirts and black jeans with steel capped boots, again looking as if they have been well walked in.
Place of origin: Melbourne Australia, the Real
Allegiance: None
Motivation: Exploring the Dream whilst helping those involved with the dream where needed
Powers: Dream pull - Rethlon can rip fragments of dream and shove them into objects of the real. The fragments are usually either feelings or particular objects or beings and the object can be anything Rethlon chooses. By touching the objects possesed by a fragment of dream the victim/user will recieve the entraped feeling tenfold or if an object/being, will halucinate and see, hear and sometimes in rare cases feel that being/object in the real, though others will not. The effect is temporary.
Mental Jarring - Rethlon can thrust himself into the chaotic most random parts of the dream and come out in another random dream of anyone anywhere in the world, though he cannot choose who or where. He can also take one other dreamer with him, however the ability is very disturbing mentally. Rethlon himself becomes heavily disorientated and ill, while fellow dreamers have been known to go insane or become lost in the dream, leaving their bodies as vegetables.
Dream walking - Rethlon can enter people's dreams so long as they are nearby in the real, however once in the dream - he can wander into other dreams in close vacinity to the one he is in. He can at any time walk back into his own dream or invite others into it.
Biography: Rethlon's mother is from the real, while his father is from the dream - meaning in the real his birth was seen as a sort of miracle, given there was supposedly no father - but he was actually concieved in his mother's dreams. His father vanished from his mother's dreams shortly after he was born, and his mother went insane. Being raised by many families Rethlon is quite resourceful in the real and has been taught sound morals and tends to see the good in all people, thus using his abilities to help others where he can gives him a sense of purpose.

Dr Whippy, have we roleplayed together before?
Were you in that RP with the 18 or some odd kids kidnapped and sent to a training camp in a desert somewhere and raised to be assassins?
I've read some of your RPs in the Archive.
I'm getting pretty excited about this.
I hope Seluna and Raven get it started soon.

A question for Seluna, if there was someone willing to step forward and take over this RP, could they?
The story would most likely not go where Raven had planned but the idea is more intriguing to me than any other here on Dreamers, at the moment. I would really like to see this RP carried out. Unfortunately, I cannot offer myself to this role because I don't think I can follow through. I have the time to post and play my part in the story but my time is limited and I have small talent as a GM. I would however be willing to follow someone else if it means getting this RP off the ground.

If there's somebody willing to take over as GM, yes you can. But also because it's been a while since the the profiles were posted and approved, I would also like to know if there are three other RPers still interested in this roleplay.
Sorry if that's too tedious. ^^;
