Well I suppose this is no surprise... And with this pretty much comes the fact that most major horror films of our generation have been remade.
I don't know how I feel about this. Robert Englund has specified he's not interested in being Freddy ( He's turning into an old man, I can understand why. ) but would like to do a cameo. Wes Craven will likely have nothing to do with the movie outside of being a co-producer ( Fine by me ) and the film is being remade by Michael Bay's production company Platinum Dunes ( Also responsible for the upcoming Friday the 13th remake )
What does this mean for Nightmare? Big budget and huge chances to ruin the classic. While I generally have low expectations for any remake, especially a horror one... Nightmare is sacred and so is the character of Freddy Krueger. Krueger has charisma, something that most slashers lack. That was a charisma brought to life by Robert Englund himself... I really hope Freddy doesn't end up being a quiet typical slasher in this remake. Freddy always was a wise cracking killer, even in the original.
I just hope Michael Bay's production doesn't ##### all over this franchise. I didn't mind their remake of The Hitcher ( Even though it lacked the character of the first ) and their remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Also a bigger budget means... Uh... Bigger budget.

I refuse to watch movies where people die stupid deaths by being strangled by cordless phones and people in dreams and such.
So, I don't care. Just another movie(s) to go "oh my dear poopsmith, they're making another one???"

Some of us enjoy the more dark and fantastical things in life. There is more to the Nightmare on Elmstreet series than " stupid kid dies here ".
Some of us enjoy it, and while you may think it's " stupid " some of us all enjoy a good scare.
Of course we're all entitled to our opinion. I enjoy horror, and always have.

I rather liked Nightmare on Elm Street a lot more than Friday the 13th and almost any slasher movie. In fact, most slasher movies bored the ##### out of me, but NOES always kept me entertained. Surrealism was, and is, rarely used for horror movies, but Nightmare has always made heavy, and succesful use of it.
You know, there's very little one could possibly add to the awesomeness that the original NOES was, so if this ends up something that idiotically ##### with something that was amazing, it wouldn't be a surprise. It really depends on the execution: as long as Freddy remains Freddy and people are killed by their dreams and not by something different the movie will probably be alright, assuming it at least has a half decent script.
I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I seen most of the slasher remakes, and they been generally hit or miss. None of them have really impressed me, because there is only so much you can do with the original source material to try and spice it up.
I will watch the NOES remake just to compare. I'm hopeful that someone will hit gold on a horror cover eventually -- I think the closest so far was Zombie's 'Halloween'.
I've been reading a bit about a 'Child's Play' remake as well, but I can't dig up enough info for a topic. I think this will have promise as well. Just as long as Dourif is along for the ride ...

I'm torn.
I must admit that NOES has my #1 favorite scene (where the girl falls asleep in class and sees her friend in the body bag, Totally ##### awesome.) And I did enjoy the first one.
However, as I remember, they had to tone down the sequels because they deemed it to violent. Are they going to go overboard with CG and violence? Or will they do a toned down PG-13 piece of #####?
I guess we'll have to wait.

I think they only had to tone down the second for some reason. I do dispise the second and seventh though and watch them very rarely.
They were never really splatter fests, but I know the 4th and 5th probably have the more gruesome and enjoyable scenes.
It won't be PG-13. It's by Michael Bay's production company and they kept the R rating on the TCM remake and as well as The Hitcher. They know who their audience is so it'll be rated R.

Well, It can't be any worse then Nightmare on Elm street 2 (I had to do a presentation on slasher films and I studied that film to death... I know FAR too much about that crappy sequel then any human being should...) but I dunno, NOES was something quite special and it had this charm to it that no other slasher had. I can imagine Friday the 13th and Halloween being remade but NOES had this certain kind of charisma which will be hard to replicate.
I can only assume that Depp will try to reprise his role has a teenager, but this time his character will have a dark past, wear eye shadow and speak in Rhyme. His character will still die but in every scene his death is mentioned as a great importance to the story and all characters will wear T-shirts with his picture on after his death or when he is just not in the scene (which probably won't happen much, even after his dramatic now gothic death scene). Of course, with Depp in the movie it will mean that Freddy now only gets a cameo role to make room for Depp.

The second one is absolutely terrible. I love the NOES series outside of the 2nd and New Nightmare. They're just not good films in any way at all. The first is original and has some solid scary moments and the rest have entertaining enough cheese, kills, and Freddy wisecracks to make them worth watching.

I feel the same way.
The second one is a black sheep. It's an off-the-wall, corny, and routine slasher. It banks off shlock, unlike the original, which actually had an interesting plot.
And just as a side note: Am I the only one here that thinks Johnny Depp had a killer bod in NOES? C'mon, he WAS handsome man
