A PS1 game I missed back in the day, so I’ll probably end up getting it for DS. Anybody interested in it at all?

QUOTE
As previously reported, NIS America will be re-releasing Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure on the Nintendo DS. For those who played the original PlayStation release of Rhapsody, I’m sorry, but it’s back with some improvements. Fans can take heart, the original sweeping vocal scores that so captured the fluttering hearts of young jRPG and gave us lyrics like “Let’s go on with hope in our hearts, love will surely show us how” gamers remain intact in their original glory.

Originally released in 2000 for the PSX, Rhapsody is a musical RPG that plays out, in part, like an interactive Broadway musical. A complete redesign of the games battle system has taken place, removing the original clumsy pseudo-TRPG style battles with a more streamlined and standard turn-based combat system. Rhapsody will take advantage of the top DS screen by providing a mini-map and party stats to make exploration easier. Players of the original can also expect to see a partial retranslation and localization of the text, with some NIS in-jokes thrown in for good measure, plus additional playable characters.

The PS1 game left too big a scar on me. I'll only replay a borrowed copy, and probaby not for long. It'll take a LOT to make that game worth (re)playing....

Though, the button remapping, addition of maps, and subtraction of the dumb almost-TRPG-but-not-quite map are considerable improvements. We shall call this "The Fight for Average!" Good luck, NIS!

I just finished playing this game and I absolutely loved it. The game is so under-rated and I love the fact that it is getting a port on the DS. Hopefully, more people will be able to play it and understand how great the game really is.

I told my best-friend about the game and he was really interested in it. Also, he has a DS, so this is just perfect for him. Thank you NIS.

The only thing new that I see in the DS version is that you can play as Kururu, normally she wasn't playable in the Playstation version. Great screenshots DB! happy.gif

I have played enough of the PS1 version to know to stay as far away as possible.

I'm not one of these guys that tries to make people like what I like and hate what I hate; I'm just legitimately curious here...

Aside from the story and cuteness, what about the game did you think was good?
Markies
Well, unfortunately, the story and the cuteness are the main selling points of the game. It is the exact opposite of one of those grind level RPGs. The story is the main focus of the game and the battle system is there to advance the story. However, the writing is what makes the story. The characters actually have depth and they talk like what you would expect them to talk like. There are so many jokes between the characters and others picking on each other that you will be smiling all the way through.

The gameplay and battles are random, but they are grid-like. The battles only take a few seconds, so even though it can be considered a SRPG, it won't take that long. All the puppets you have adds like a Pokemon level to the gameplay which adds some variety.

I'm not saying it's the greatest game in the world, but if you want a nice diversion between the normal long and sometimes tedious RPG's, Rhapsody will be the cure for what ails you. The story is too fun and it is quite endearing for something to kill 8 hours on.

The main quen was a hottie, over than that the game looked really overdone in the cute and underdone in the fun factor. It's like a cult RPG

(Why I liked Rhapsody)

I see.
Well spoken.

On my end, I WANTED to like it, and in fact the initial change-of-pace little cutiness appealed to me as I was in the market for something lighthearted, but that couldn't overcome the awful gameplay. All the dungeons, to me, were boring and in many cases, simply pallete swaps of previous dungeons. The game was far too easy, you couldn't get a game over even if you wanted to, heh. I know it was targeted at like, 8 year olds or whatever, so maybe I should have expected it. And to me, the music was just wretched. Like, I'm a fan of cute when cute is done well, but it just felt like a failed attempt to me.
That and I kinda thought the good story concept was marred by a lousy script:

And there are my abbreviated thoughts ^^

Heh, well I'm also one of those rare people who not only played the game, but also liked it. Though I don't really remember enough of it to give a detailed explanation as to why exactly. But I remember it gave me a good impression. It's different in many ways to most rpg's though, but I think that's why I liked it. For the cuteness and it's story I guess. But I don't remember a single tune from the game, except for the cat witch boss song. And that one of the puppets looked a lot like Spawn.

I always wondered about something in the game. It was before I had access to Gamefaqs (perhaps before Gamefaqs even existed?) so I couldn't check up on it. But I remember encountering another one of those red Emerald Weapon lookalike bosses at the end of a dungeon (I think it was optional) but it didn't do anything. All it could do was turn and face you if you approached it to "talk" to it. I think that this red mech boss was one of the final bosses of the game otherwise. Not sure what it was doing there or if there was an explanation for it.
Just something I always wondered about.

Anyway a DS remake sounds like something I might be interested in. I wondered if I'd ever find an excuse to replay the game (I still have the original) but now it looks like I might.

Since I missed the game the first time around, I'll pick it up when it's released on the DS.

Yeah, as the copies of the game (On the PS1) didn't sell very well and not for long before they went out of print.
Vilagen
Heh, I guess I was lucky to find the game about two years ago or so in practically new condition. Hell, I think that my copy was never even played before I bought it. Both CDs had no marks and it gave me that kind of tug you usually had the first time you tried to get new PS1 games out of their case.

Honestly, Rhapsody is extremely childish on its own level. I mean, I could stand playing Phantom Brave and La Pucelle when they came out, and I possibly still could today. But Rhapsody? Even in the most deepest, darkest corner in my home, far away from any other human contact as possible, I was still embarrassed to play this game. This isn't even counting the short and repetitive dungeons along with it being way too easy. This has to be the only game that I ever put down because I really felt too old for it. I can certainly see why it looks interesting; the artwork is nice and it is from Nippon Ichi, but I really can not see how any guy over 16 (that is probably still giving it too much credit) could enjoy playing this.

The first run, but Atlus pulled a surprising event and rereleased the game a few years ago. If I remember correctly, it was when Gamestop was still selling PS1 games because that is where I picked the game up and it wasn't that expensive/rare. It's amazing that a company would do that as it never happens, so finding it nowadays shouldn't be too rare or even hard to find.

For example, Amazon is selling it for....23.99 used and 39.93 new.

I was bored the other day so I tried this game out, and it is a surprising little game actually. Yes, it may be cutesy, and with a cutesy type of cast, but I found it quite enjoyable, with its anime sorta inspirations, and its jokes and such.

I am just about to enter that cat cave thing. Has anyone else played this since it came out?
