Well, we know that today is the big day for the Europeans, it is Euro 2008, held in neutral Switzerland and Germany two-Austria!
Who are your favourites, who do you think who will win? Are we going to see any surprises? Do the Dutch and Portuguese cause another card fest? What will your favourite group be?
This topic is purely for Euro 2008, as the other football topic is more of a general talk, this is simply for Euro 2008.
Here just a simple sum up of all the groups:
Group A:
Czech Republic
Portugal
Switzerland
Turkey
Group B:
Austria
Croatia
Germany
Poland
Group C:
France
Italy
Netherlands
Romania
Group D:
Greece
Russia
Spain
Sweden
Let's get the posting started!

Tomorrow's the first two games. They have a huge TV set downtown, so I might catch the games there, or perhaps we'll just stay home and watch. Haven't decided yet. I'm looking forward to it though.

Going to my friends father, their family is all Portuguese and they are hardcore fans!! I am going for portugual and Spain. Italy, without Cannavaro I think will suffer alot. But we will find out aha. Upsets I can see Crotia maybe doing some damage and possibly Greece who won it in 04. SHould be a good time. I cant wait!

Two games to wet the appetite tonight with Switzerland vs Czech republic at 5.00pm(BBC1) and Portugal vs Turkey(ITV1) at 7.45pm. Both games will be good but the match between Portugal and Turkey being the more interesting.

8:45pm is when Portugal starts, you have to look from the Switzerland perspective, Phisix =P.
Anyway, I'll be rooting for the Netherlands (not Holland ><) of course.
I do think our chances are rather low, considering the world champions and the world cup's runner up are in the same group.

I forgot about that. Apologies to the Swiss.
I hear Van Persie was injured. Is that a game or the whole tournament? Don't put your team down. If Scotland can beat France, then your team certainly will. Just because the other teams are some of the best, they will not always perform the way you think they will perform. You team has enough talent to get you to the next stage.
Pesmerga
Jun 7 2008, 05:27 AM
Well, technically I should be used to this. I mean, we usually have bad luck with the group stages, but most of the times we battle ourselves through.
This time though, it is the number ONE and TWO of the world cup. Sure, we have the talent, but will it be enough?
I'd like to think so, but you never know how the ball will roll. We'll see on monday =D.

I see where you are coming from, but you should cheer on your team and think that you will get through, not being submissive and thinking you wont. These two tournaments always throw up surprises so get ready for some.
What players are in your team that were not in your team for the World Cup?

Italy doesn't have Cannavaro. He was a a solid anchor for the defense during the World Cup run. I think the Netherlands will do pretty good in the group. I can see them maybe going to the semi's.

If you search hard enough online you can find some p2p sites or something that will show them. My brother uses something called a
sopcast to watch some Premiership matchs.
The Switzerland vs Czech republic games was quite an enjoyable game once the Czech scored. Just watching the Portugal vs Turkey game at the moment and Portugal are playing better at the moment than Turkey, but Turkey have been keeping their own. I hope to see Turkeys Arda Turan sometime this second half.

The Czech Republic vs Switzerland was quite an enjoyable game indeed, it showed some good actions by both sides, though Switzerland showed better chances in front of goal and the goal for Czech Republic was rather lucky.
Too bad Frei had to come off, it seems his tournament is over, which is a major blow to Switzerland, as he was one of the better and more important players.
They still have Hakan Yakim, who made a great subsitution and Barnetta, who showed some good footballing as well.
Portugal won their match as well, which is what I didn't hope for. I think they won 2-0, but I turned it off after they scored the second goal.
Turkey did a good job at preventing them from scoring for a long time, but eventually it wasn't enough.
I am not pleased Portugal won their match, because I hate them and I think everyone should.
Anyway, no major surprises in the matches today, maybe group B will show some surprises on sunday.
EDIT: The Dutch squad lost Arjen Robben, good morale boost for the Dutch, he might come back for the second match against France, but he won't be in the Italy game.

The matches of today were quite entertaining and in my opinion better than the ones from yesterday.
Croatia vs Austria was a very interesting match, as Croatia was the clear favourite, but Austria showed some very nice footballing and definitely wasn't underdoing themselves, or putting themselves ashame.
Croatia did won the match with 1-0, due to a penalty kick, but it could've gone the other way around easily. A lot of chances for both teams and maybe Austria feel they should've gotten more.
Germany vs Poland was going to be interesting as well, mainly because there is such a rivalry between the 2 countries.
Germany didn't had too much problems, untill late in the second half. Poland was fighting very hard to score an equalizer, after they had conceded early in the first half, but late in the second half Germany scored a second goal, after poor defending from Poland.
Poland wasn't organized well, at least the defense wasn't. They got a several chances and could've easily scored some goals, but none.
Both matches were good, but no surprises again. So far, none of the underdogs have scored a single goal.
Tomorrow, Netherlands vs Italy and France vs Romania!

Germany's second goal was great,(Although lucky) and I cant believe Klose scuffed it. Germany played good football and showed why they are one of the favorites. Still as you said nothing really special at the moment. I pin my hopes on the Italy game tomorrow.

Hehe, I thought it was funny that Podolski (a polish man) scored both goals against Poland. His second goal was beautiful though.
I though most matches were pretty entertaining actually. Even The Cheque republic vs Schveitz offered good entertainment. But I have to say that todays France vs. Romania was a boring match. Not much happened and France played badly. No Henry though so hopefully the next game will be better.
Just finished watching Holland va. Italy. Superb match. 3-0 to Holland and well deserved. Though I question the players Italy's coach chose for the lineup. Likes Milan much? Del Piero should have come in sooner.

Well, today's matches were a mixed bag, really.
The first match between Romania and France wasn't exciting and France was playing painfully bad and uninspired. Romania was in my opinion the better team even.
Mutu and Chivu showed some decent football and Romania fended themselves really well against France. If France will play like this against us, I see no problem.
Now, the second match will go down in history books. What a match it was on many levels. Truly the best match thusfar and I fully enjoyed this match.
Both Italy and the Netherlands showed some great football, great tactics and awesome ball skills.
I knew we had a chance against Italy, but never did I expect such a beatdown.
Granted, the first goal was offside and there was no denying that, however, it was a fault by the linesman and not the Dutch team, van Nistelrooy knew he was offside.
However, the second and third goal were absolutely astonishing. The key man in both goals was obviously van Bronckhorst, which is very pleasing to me, as he is a Feyenoord player.
Both goals were extremely quick counterattacks and they showed that van Bronckhorst ran 80+ meters in both attacks.
If we play like this in every match, we're definitely a force to be reckoned with. Take that bookmakers!

QUOTE (Pesmerga @ Jun 9 2008, 10:56 PM)

the first goal was offside and there was no denying that, however, it was a fault by the linesman and not the Dutch team, van Nistelrooy knew he was offside.
Actually it wasn't offside, quoting UEFA:
QUOTE
Tuesday 10 June 2008
UEFA supports Dutch goal decision
by Mark Chaplin from Basel

UEFA has emphasised that the goal scored by Netherlands striker Ruud van Nistelrooy in last night's UEFA EURO 2008™ match against Italy in Berne was valid, and that referee Peter Fröjdfeldt acted correctly in awarding it.
Not offside
UEFA General Secretary David Taylor was reacting to claims from some quarters that Van Nistelrooy was standing in an offside position when he scored the first of the Netherlands' goals in their 3-0 win. "I would like to take the opportunity to explain and emphasise that the goal was correctly awarded by the referee team," he said. "I think there's a lack of understanding among the general football public, and I think it's understandable because this was an unusual situation. The player was not offside, because, in addition to the Italian goalkeeper, there was another Italian player in front of the goalscorer. Even though that other Italian player at the time had actually fallen off the pitch, his position was still relevant for the purposes of the offside law."
Still involved
The starting point, said Mr Taylor, is the Laws of the Game – Law 11 – which deal with offside, whereby a player is in an offside position if he is nearer to his opponents' goalline than both the ball and the second-last opponent. "There need to be two defenders involved," the UEFA General Secretary said. "If you think back to the situation, the first is the goalkeeper, and the second is the defender who, because of his momentum, actually had left the field of play. But this defender was still deemed to be part of the game. Therefore he is taken into consideration as one of the last two opponents. As a result, Ruud van Nistelrooy was not nearer to the opponents' goal than the second-last defender and, therefore, could not be in an offside position.
Rare incident
"This is a widely-known interpretation of the offside law among referees that is not generally known by the wider football public," he continued. "Incidents like this are very unusual – although I'm informed that there was an incident like this about a month ago in a Swiss Super League match between FC Sion and FC Basel 1893. [It was] initially suggested that this [goal] was a mistake by the referee in terms of the offside law – the commentator later apologised publicly, as he didn't realise that this was the correct application of the law."
Law applied
Mr Taylor concluded: "So let's be clear – the referees' team applied the law in the correct manner. If we did not have this interpretation of the player being off the pitch then what could happen is that the defending team could use the tactic of stepping off the pitch deliberately to play players offside, and that clearly is unacceptable. The most simple and practical interpretation of the law in this instance is the one that is adopted by referees throughout the world – that is that unless you have permission from the referee to be off the pitch, you are deemed to be on it and deemed to be part of the game. That is why the Italian defender, even though his momentum had taken him off the pitch, was still deemed to be part of the game, and therefore the attacking player put the ball into the net, and it was a valid goal. The law in this place was applied absolutely correctly."

It wasn't offside because one of Italy's players was lying outside of the field behind the goal after a collision with Cassilas. And the rules say that a player can't walk off the field to put an opponent offside. Granted he was knocked out, but it was by his own teammate.
Spain played great today. Dominated Russia complete.
And Sweden just finished their game against Greece with 2-0. Great game but it started off slow and Greece played really borring when they passed the ball back and forth in their own defense zone for several minutes. Zlatan's goal was awesome though. One touch from Larsson, and then La Bomba!

By the way, I believe Ibrahimovic is now the most well payed football player in the world after his new contract with Inter, but I have to check that up for the full details.

The Spain vs Russia game was awesome. I did put my money on them to do well this year as I stated somewhere else on this board, and with a team like they have, they should be getting to the knockout stages in any case.

The Spain vs Russia game was definitely a good match, but not as good as the Netherlands vs Italy one. More goals, but it was a strong side vs a weak side.
Anyway, great work from Spain, however, they have been in this situation before. If I recall correct, Spain won their first match at the World Cup as well, but then they still managed to not get through to the next round, or something like that.
David Villa and Fernando Torres showed some quality football and Spain has a team to be reckoned with.
I didn't watch the Greece vs Sweden match, I wasn't really interested in Greece and from what I did saw was pretty boring.
Portugal vs Czech Republic was a good match with a poor result.
Czech Republic played a good match and were in my opinion better than Portugal.
Portugal showed their sportsmanship again, but simply being as disrespectful as they usually are. They're great actors.
Ricardo, Pepe, C Ronaldo, Simao and many others showed this. I was rooting for Czech Republic, but I wasn't expecting much, considering they're missing many important players, such as Rosicky, Simic and Poborsky.
Czech Republic deserved much more than this result.
One good thing coming from the Portuguese side, C Ronaldo, Simao and Deco fighting over who takes the free kick. Even funnier when Simao shot the ball straight into the wall. Yeah, nice job ego tripper. Next time, you might want someone else to take it.

Psychic powers? If only you had bet x'D.
Anyway, good match, lots of chances and overall good football. I don't like the Turkish team though, just like Portugal, they dive a lot.
On that note, even Portugal had a chance of not making it through the next round, as Switzerland had yet to face Portugal and Czech Republic already had 3 points and is going to face Turkey. If Switzerland would have won, that would bring them to 3 points as well and we'd have 2 teams with 3 points, both a chance of getting 6 points and thus getting equal points to Portugal. Switzerland would go through to the next round, as they did better against Portugal and if Czech Republic won with a nice margin, they would go through as well.
Alas, all this has gone to ruins, because Turkey won.
I liked the Swiss team, many players that go under the radar, but show some quality football. Of course not anything like the triple A superstars, but still some nice football. Hakan Yakin was very good at the World Cup 2 years ago and he shows it again. He is definitely a player that proves Switzerland has some nice players.

Couldn't finish the Germany game, nor could I watch the second game between Austria and Poland, but I do know the results.
It is good to see that both Poland and Austria still have a chance. I hope one of those teams would go through, but that would be at the cost of Germany then, as Croatia already qualified.
Germany had a bad game, from what I had seen, this still does not mean they won't continue. We all know what happened with France last World Cup, when they had 2 points after 2 matches and they worked their way all the way to the final.
Italy has a good chance as well, considering they are the current world champions. Good thing for us is that we beat Italy and Romania and France had a draw, giving us a good start ahead.
We're facing France tomorrow, which is a very important match, considering Italy and France face each other in the last match of our group.
France is a country with good players and are very unpredictable, as has been proven in the past.
I hope the Netherlands will play the way we did against Italy, though we now have more players available to us this time.
For example Robben has returned from his groin injury and van Persie should have recovered as well. He did play against Italy, when he was brought on the second half, but he wasn't fully fit yet, as you could see.
Italy will have a tough match against Romania. People seem to underestimate Romania's quality. We lost to them in the qualifying rounds.
Funny note, they got first in our qualifying group, where we got second. Romania has good players, such as Chivu and Mutu, so Italy should be ready for them.
Italy's defense should also sharpen up, as they got shredded when we countered. Though, I have to admit, those were extremely fast counters. I mean, Italy scored almost one goal against us and 17 seconds later, we scored the goal, where van Bronckhorst ran 80+ meters.... twice.
But with our 3-0 win over Italy, I think we made a good name for ourselves. All we have to do now, is to live up to our name.
We're not the favourites to win, as bookmakers told us we would probably get defeated in the semi finals, but we've made a good start, but as Phisix said, the first match is important, yet not important.

Maybe this will make people realize that Romania is much better than people make them to be.
Romania could've won this game, if only Mutu scored the penalty, or if Buffon didn't had a lucky save, considering the ball deflected from his hand on his foot out of goal. The commentators were saying how great the save was, but in all honesty, it was a lucky one.
Anyway, Italy got denied a goal, so they should've won, because Luca Toni was not offside, maybe this was justice.
I wasn't too sure if it were actually a pentalty kick or not, it could have been, but the sound went off after the match, so I couldn't see the analysis.
Anyway, it looked like a penalty kick, as he was clearly holding the Romanian player.
One downside here though, Romania showed some proper unfair play, but acting once they were tackled. Good work on the cameremen and editor for showing this on tele, it was shown really well. One player got hit on his foot and was grabbing his knee for the pain, I find that quite miraculous.
Italy is in trouble now and no matter what, they have to win their match against France.
The Netherlands on that matter have a good window to look out to. All we have to do is beat France and we've qualified ourselves.
Now, I made that sound easy, it of course isn't. You never know what France is up to and even though we beated Italy hands down, this will be an entire different match. Maybe France will play as bad as they did against Romania, maybe they will play completely different and show us all four corners of the pitch.
We do have more players available now, as Robben and van Persie are fully recovered, so we might play a different style tonight.
However, we all know the saying: "never change a winning side", so we might resort to the playstyle we used against Italy. FUnny note, it was a last resort method, due to injuries.
Other funny note, Johan Cruyff said the tactics were wrong.
Mr. Cruyff, your footballing skills in the past were beyond amazing, but your mouth seems to be too big. If you know so much, why don't become the coach for the Netherlands after van Basten? You always talk, as if you know things better, how about you actually back up your words.
Yeah, I don't like Cruyff as a criticist. Arrogant bitch.

This was a marvelous match. France gave us so many problems throughout the game and really showed how weak our defense was.
We MUST work on our defense, because sometimes it was just ridiculous.
However, all my worries were for nothing, because we tore down the two World Cup finalists.
France played miles better than they did against Romania and were close to turning the match around, however, we were lucky at some parts and again showed our amazing counter abilities.
I was hoping van Nistelrooy would score that header, it would be the cherry on the cake for his amazing performance, however, that little trick he did before the ball was passed from Robben to van Persie was very nifty as well.
The turning point was when Henry made his goal, which is classic him, but unfortunatly for France, it was countered straight after by a marvelous goal by Robben.
Nobody was expecting it, not even Robben, but it was a good goal.
The best goal came from Sneijder though, truly a wonderful goal that made a nice curve over the goalkeeper and stroked the crossbar. He is known for his shooting ability and this just proves it.
Kuyt and van Persie made good goals as well, though van Persie was a bit lucky, as he blasted the ball against the goalkeeper and it rolled in.
On another note, it was no handball. Yes, the ball hit Ooijer's arm, but he was not out to hit the ball with his hand.
Also, France and Italy are in a very annoying situation, because it is technically up to the Netherlands if they go through or not.
We can take out two of our biggest opponents in 1 hit, by letting Romania win. Which, even though it is unethnical, the best option to us, as both Italy and France will be eliminated. I am pretty sure that van Basten will take this into consideration.
Anyway, we played really well again, but we have to up our defense, we really made some poor mistakes in the back.
Sure, we have an amazing counter and an amazing offensive force, but that alone does not make a team. Our defense needs work. Speaking off, kudos to van der Sar, he made some critical saves.

Holland could come up against the team you let through, so letting the weakest team get through(Romania of course) would be the best plan of action. Plus, having both world cup winners and runners up not even getting through is a very good thing. Two matches until the final, hope Holland keep up their winning streak.
Henry should have scored that chip shot as well, and missing it was a bit strange coming from him.(Back in his Arsenal days he wold have done it perfectly) Glad to see Kuyt score as that should boost his confidence for Liverpools new season.

Henry should have scored that chip shot as well, and missing it was a bit strange coming from him.(Back in his Arsenal days he wold have done it perfectly) Glad to see Kuyt score as that should boost his confidence for Liverpools new season.
I think it would be better for holland to let France or Italy go through, cause holland knows that they can play well against the type of play that those 2 teams play and the chance would be higher to win again from them then from an other team. Just thinking not sure

And what would be more cool, to win again against Roemenia in the semi-final or beating a former worldchampion or the current worldchampion again in the semi-final.

I guess, but then both teams will want revenge for the drilling they got and will pull out the stops.(Just like Italy did when Romania scored first) It does not matter to me really, but Holland will just have to beat them again.
Spain vs Sweden and Russia vs Greece are playing tonight and both should offer some quality football. Spain vs Sweden will be the best match(hopefully) and whoever wins out these will will go through. My money is on Spain, but Sweden are no push overs. Greece and Russia should both up their games as both their opening game football was not that good.
My Predictions:
Spain 3 Sweden 1
Russia 1 Greece 1

It's halftime now in the Sweden - Spain match after 1-1 from Torres and Ibrahimovic. Spain started off by dominating the first 10 minutes, but then the game turned around completely and it's Sweden directing the rest of the first half and Spain aren't doing much at all. Looks like they're a bit shocked at how it turned around and they're not quite in the game. Losing passes, making panicky shots instead of starting a steady offense.
I'm surprised that Henrik Larsson is running down and playing defense as much as he is, and it's working well. He stole a few balls, and Spain aren't able to do much on the offensive side.
The winner of this match will most likely decide the group winner, and who gets to play Holland in the quarter finals.
~Edit~
In the second half it was the other way around, and even more so in Spains favor due to lack of offense from Sweden's side. They started off by replacing Zlatan due to his knee, and Larsson got tired so not much happened on the offensive side. They fought well though, but were forced to play a lot of defense, and Spain managed to score in the last minute through Villa. So the game ended 2-1 to Spain.

The Germany vs Austria wasn't very good, in my opinion. Austria clearly lacks quality, especially when its a critical moment.
Germany didn't do very well either, but for the first time in 12 years they got through to the next round, which is good for them.
They also have to face Portugal this time, so I hope they will take out Portugal. Initially I wanted something like this, so it is good to see it happening.
Tonight is the Netherlands vs Romania, which isn't all that important, as we're already qualified for our group and are the winners, no matter what outcome.
Italy and France might be an interesting match though, with both teams needing a win. Personally, I think the Netherlands are going for the win tonight, as that keeps their momentum going, but there might be a draw as well, it depends on what van Basten is going to do.
However, Italy and France need a win and I wonder what will happen when Romania looses and Italy and France get a draw. I think things will be decided on goal diffirence, which will result in France and Italy going out as well, but I am not sure on this matter.

Yeah the Germany - Austria match wasn't very entertaining, but Ballack's goal was beautiful. There have been quite a few goals in this tournament so far, and some nice ones too.
Some of my favorite ones so far:
Zlatan's goal against Greece. Drogba power!
Podolski's second goal agains't Poland.
Turkeys last goal against Chekoslovakia.
Ballack's goal against Austria.
Schneider's goal against Romania.
But the Turkey - Chekoslovakia match was amazing. Turkey were down by 2-0 during the 75'th minute. Who would have thought that they'd win? The announcer (at least on our side) went completely nuts when Turkey scored the third goal, right after the second goal that was made with just a few minutes left of the game.

I think Van Basten will be fielding the weakest team possible,(Which is s very sensible thing to do) so that he has all his best players all good and ready for Holland quarter final against Spain. This could pave the way for a shock Romania win and ending France and Italys hopes. Will have to wait till tonight to find out though.

Ballack's goal was indeed amazing. I was litterally gasping when I saw that ball go in wich such force.
I also love Sneijder's goal against France, the 4th goal for the Netherlands. It was a beauty =).

Well, Italy certainly crawled through the eye of the needle today. I think Italy should be VERY thankful to the Netherlands, as we secured their progress.
I still think that this will come back to us and that we face Italy in the semi final and then loose, but for now, I am glad we won, as this simply boosts our confidence. We beated Romania, who beated us in the qualifiers, with our second team. We'll go in the next round with loads of confidence and hopefully this will bring us all the way to the end.
Ps. What a fantastic finish by van Persie. It is good to see him score goals again, as he had a rough season at Arsenal.
Now we'll face either Russia, or Sweden. I am hoping for Russia myself, as they have from further than Sweden did. Of course Sweden has more quality than Russia, but Russia clearly fought for their place and beated England in qualifying for Euro 2008. That and Guus Hiddink is coaching Russia, I'd like to see how the Dutch coach will fair against the Dutch.

I don't see why Holland will not have full confidence for their quarter final match as they are the only team to win all three group games, and two take down two of the best teams in the world buy that many goals is a super boost to their contest. I see Holland rising high in the FIFA world rankings next time it is changed.
France have two years now to sort out their team, the old ones cannot cut it much anymore. Benzema to be a future France superstar.
Looking forward to the Holland and Spain game.
