It's been awhile since we heard from Sucker Punch about their upcoming PS3 game, inFAMOUS. Well, looks like the shroud of secrecy will be lifted in the July issue of Game Informer. The cover confirms that this will be a "sandbox game" (a la Grand Theft Auto IV). However, you will have "extraordinary powers" that come from a "cataclysmic explosion." It's looking dark, it's looking epic ... and it's exclusive to PS3. Game Informer is promising ten pages of info on the game. Once this issue comes in, our next trip to the bathroom will also be quite infamous.

I remember looking up this game on Sony's site a while back but could never really find much out on it. It sounds alright. Though, what is a "sandbox" game? I know the little news blip posted said it was like GTAIV, but that doesn't help me as I haven't played that game (so I don't know the system of things).

Well anyway, looking forward to more info on this game as it comes out. =).

A 'sandbox' game(one of my favourite genres) is basically an open world game where you're pretty much free to do anything and go anywhere within the games limits such a huge city like GTA or multiple islands and cities like Just Cause. Games like this are usually open ended with a main mission/quest mode and lots of (usually) optional side missions/quests to keep you distracted or entertained. Some RPGs like Oblivion and Morrowind use a similar approach, although such RPGs tend to be far more interactive. I hope that made sense smile.gif

From first those first three screenshots Infamous looks to be a bit like Crackdown with special powers(Which was a very fun game), and not cel-shaded graphics. This could be a very interesting game and being able to use extraordinary powers will be a very fun aspect.

24th June 2008 – If society collapsed tomorrow and you found yourself with unique powers that could either help people or hurt them, which would you do? That’s the question at the centre of inFamous, the forthcoming PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) title from Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE). Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, this open-ended, free-roaming game puts you in the shoes of Dylan, an everyday guy and urban explorer, in the aftermath of a huge disaster that destroys his hometown of Empire City. As Dylan, you must first learn to use new found powers and then decide how you will use them.

After the explosion, Empire City falls into chaos and Dylan must use his new powers and climbing agility. Along the way he will unravel an evolving mystery, experience fame and/or infamy, and battle powerful, iconic villains. inFamous gives you the freedom to play how you want, whether that’s aggressively, tactically or stealthily – be warned, however, that the city’s people and environment will react to what you do. Events will unfold based on the role you take and your actions will create broader reactions in the citizens and landscape around you.

Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, the studio who gave PlayStation® the acclaimed “Sly Racoon” franchise, inFamous brings you a new type of superhero – an uncertain man with the weaknesses of a normal human being. What will you turn Dylan into? The choice is yours when inFamous for PS3 arrives in 2009 for PAL Markets.

Yes, it does look like Crackdown but without the cel shading graphics style. That is not a problem though, as Crackdown was a good game. Those screens look nice enough and being able to use special powers should be fun.

The game is looking pretty cool so far, there's a few glitches that need a bit of ironing out but It's easy to say that I'm sold smile.gif

I downloaded the leipzig trailer last night (the first thing i've seen of this game) and it looks excellent. Hopefully there will be plenty to do since GTA4 really pushed the standards of what a sandbox game should be, but I have faith in suckerpunch.

Out of interest what glitches Cloudy? I thought the game was still in development til 09, there isn't a demo or anything out is there?

It was just a small judgement based on the game play feed post I made above. I just noticed the odd stutter or drop in frame rate, the odd screwy camera angle (at 2.40 I think) and a really stiff looking close quarters battle and aiming system - but you could put the last two down to the fact that the person playing the game actually seemed pretty bad at it lol!

The frame rate will probably get sorted out though. I would like to see a more fluid system and more to the combat than just shooting lightening out of your hands but (reviews and demo pending) I am very much sold on this, a PS3 exclusive super hero sandbox game definitely hits the right notes with me smile.gif

I see ^^ I was just asking since I really haven't seen anything of this game until last night, and I couldn't view the links earlier >_< hopefully these are simply issues related to the early build and not relfective of the final product, since the trailer they had on the PSN looks awesome, with some very nice art in it as well.
Dragon Brigade
From what gameplay the last video had, I think it looks pretty cool. I'm always reminded of Darth Sidius's (spelling?) force powers when I see the lightning come from the guy though, haha. But yeah, I think it's looking good. Nice video finds. =).
Mushroom
Wow, I was watching the Infamous demo they have up on the livewire on ign (same demo feature as in Cloudy's G4 link, which I had missed til now) and this game looks SO good. I had only seen the trailer, but the gameplay looks so slick man. Some of his powers like the lightning grenade are crazy, and I love how he can just scale things and start blasting away from that height. Anyway, this all came about because IGN has a really good interview with the guys making it up today, and I just have to say I'm super psyched for this game. Click HERE for the link smile.gif
Dragon Brigade
Nice interview. =o. Features are really sounding good. Wondering about the PSN/multiplayer stuff, but we'll find that out later. Maybe I'll even have a PS3 by the end of '09. I'd definitely get this game then (around release, if not spot on), assuming I'm within the age range (that it isn't Mature. Can't remember what they've said about it, but I'd guess it probably will be.). Definitely anticipating this one. That's all I have to say this time, haha...
Mushroom
I believe they were saying they want you to be able to wreak a large level of destruction, but they're aiming for a Teen rating, so nothing horrific or bloody will be in there. The multiplayer could definetely be VERY interesting, depending what other peoploe introduce during the story with other superpowers. Deathmatch were everyne has a differenc power could be awesome, especially since we've seen the smart ways in which Cole can draw and use his powers. Who knows though, we might just get another "you go superpowered guy, and fight a squad of 8" or whatever. We'll see ^^ Something on par with GTA would be desireable, but a mix of powers would really make that interesting.

Preview from TGS at Joystiq:

QUOTE
It's been over two months since we last saw InFamous, but developer Sucker Punch took some time at TGS to show us how it's progressing. So how's it look? Pretty much the same as last time. The demonstration was set in a different part of the in-game city, but very little new gameplay was actually revealed.

Sucker Punch's Ken Schramm guided us through a mission, titled "Blood Trail," while senior producer Grady Hunt talked us through what was going on. The level is fairly early in the game -- about five missions in -- and has protagonist Cole discovering a new power. "Post-Cognition" allows you to read people's memories; in this case, giving you a new objective. A dead woman's mind (do dead people still have minds?) reveals an "echo" of her running through the streets towards a Reaper hideout.

After reading the memory, Cole was able to follow this echo, which takes the form of an outlined silhouette. On the way, he was ambushed by Reapers and we were shown more of the game's combat, which is familiar by now. Schramm took advantage of Cole's ability to climb the environment, as well as his electric based combat abilities: shock grenades, force push and his normal electric projectiles. The demo showed off the destructible environments as Cole ripped apart and electrified the surrounding area.

During the fight, Cole encountered an Elite Reaper which, sadly, was exactly the same as the one in previous demonstrations. We were hoping to see more examples of enemy powers, but this character was wielding the ground quake and super speed powers that we'd seen before. Apparently, there will be boss characters which will have the powers of all of its underlings. Hopefully this means large set pieces with incredibly powerful enemies. Unfortunately we weren't shown any of that.

Narrative begun to sneak into the game in the form of radio communication with various friends. We're not sure who all of Cole's friends are, but they're fairly chatty. They made the experience seem a lot less lonely and allowed Cole to soliloquize without it sounding hokey (even if he is voiced by "Stephen Hawking" until an appropriate voice actor is found).

Two other new powers were also shown. One allowed Cole to draw power from a downed enemy after combat. Very handy if you suddenly find yourself in a blackout, without anywhere to draw power from. The other superpower shown was a lightning summon, which will be -- *gulp* -- motion controlled, just like the tornado launcher in Ratchet & Clank.

Various other things were teased, such as the fact that "powers you start the game with will be very different to powers you'll end the game with." The superpower system will be layered too, so you'll find powers change as you progress through the game. Post-Cognition won't just be used to find echos later in the game, for example.

Sucker Punch kept teasing about these layered powers and the morality system that will supposedly be a core part of the game. Until we see them, though, it's hard to tell how it'll affect the gameplay. At least with the addition of objectives and the radio communication, things are starting to feel slightly more integrated. Considering it's still seven months from release, there's plenty more to come.
