Good news. =).

QUOTE
Square Enix's PSP Star Ocean games should be hitting the States this November, if this listing from a GameCrazy store is to be believed. The RPG remakes will retail for $39.99 each. Square Enix has yet to officially announce a localized version of the game, but with this new evidence (and the listing found on GameFly), it's clear that the games are coming to the US.

Woooooh! This better come to NZ, I can finally play the first one biggrin.gif

I'm glad S-E bringing SO PSP series over here. I do believe it will be announced, at least I hope it is.
Pesmerga
Good way to catch up with the old games, for those who missed out.
I missed out on the first one (originally), but did manage to get the second one, with A LOT of luck, as it was the only copy there was in the store and nobody ever heard of it, nor did I read anything about it.
I just bought it, because it was another RPG and the 80+ endings on the back cover, caught my eye.
Bomb
Odd that it's only showing the second one and not First Departure...
The Evil Dead
This is the sex. I hated selling all my PS1 collection and this was one of the games in it... I'll absolutely be buying this.
PAL RPGamer
Good news for sure - been wanting to give these a go since finishing SO3 - will probably put these on pre-order as soon as they go up. Here's hoping the 30th September date proves accurate for the First Departure release.
Bomb
It's official.

After speculation and wonder as to whether or not either (or both, or which, or whatever) of the two Star Ocean series remakes for PlayStation Portable would receive English translation, Square Enix USA is ready to officially settle the matter. Both Star Ocean: First Departure and Star Ocean: Second Evolution are on track for North American releases, and videos of each will be shown at E3.

Also on video will be Star Ocean IV: The Last Hope for Xbox 360, and the multiplatform The Last Remnant. Playable demos of Dragon Quest IV’s DS remake, Final Fantasy IV’s DS remake, Chrono Trigger’s DS port, Infinite Undiscovery for 360, and Song Summoner for iPod will appear for media members to play and unanimously report that all were in fact “So awesome,” as per annual tradition.
Athrun
PSP has been getting a lot of games I want to play. And since I never played Star Ocean 1 or 2 but heard good things, this is good news to me. Might pick up a PSP slim some day, but it'll be after I get a PS3. (I want to play Spectral Force as well.)

Did yours get stolen by Va1dius?

Lol.

Anyway, the specific dates are up on PSP Fanboy, so I thought I'd post them up...

After tons of retailer leaks, it looks like Square Enix has finally announced Star Ocean is coming to the US. The first PSP game, The First Departure will be available for the US market on October 21st. The Second Evolution will be available on January 6th.
The Evil Dead
What's the word on these anyway? Full blown remakes or ports with a fancy extra or two?

Either way I'm buying.

This is from a PSP Fanboy article from back in Sept. ’07, but I can’t imagine the English games will be much different. From what this says, they are actual remakes, not just fancy ports.

QUOTE
Oh, yes, it's been a while since we rejoiced in the original Star Ocean and the positively received Star Ocean 2, back on the SNES and PlayStation, respectively. Well, we say SNES, but we mean ZSNES or any other emulator that would play it for the non-Japanese audience, since we hadn't seen it stateside. Regardless, the two titles are getting PSP remakes and the facelifts come in more sizes than just re-translations and bug fixes, as shown in the scans you can reach through the NeoGAF forums.

The first game gets a new battle system that better resembles the action-oriented ones found in the latter two titles, along with updated sprites and backgrounds. The second title gets similar upgrades, but will also feature facial pop-ups when a character talks (just imagine any anime or Gust-inspired RPG). Sadly, the story in the second one will still suck. Yes, we said it. The second disc was a killer for momentum -- too many fetch quests and sidetracking before the final battle, if you ask us. Regardless, the games were very good, so we'll definitely try these out. Perhaps we'll get a hands-on at Tokyo Game Show. Perhaps not.

That looks awesome! And strangely cute...

Thanks for the link DB - I'd forgot to keep my eyes open for this during E3.
Well if I wasn't already psyched for this game then I definitely would be after that - looks like Production IG have been working their magic once again - here's looking forward to October 21st (well probably closer to somewhere around the 28th depending how long it takes to reach here from the States but you get the idea)
cloudycat
Nice one DB smile.gif It's looking great I can't wait for this will the second be far behind it?

I'm really loving my handheld RPGs lately my PS3 and 360 aren't getting a look in I've been pretty obsessed with Jean d'Arc on the PSP and that will soon be followed by FFIV on the DS.

Really? In this day and age S-E should just wise up and release the same games in Europe that the US get. I mean yeah the PSP is region free which is cool so it doesn't stop me from importing(and I will) but that's beside the point we've had sh!tty treatment long enough.
Dragon Brigade
Then I guess that's just the North America release then. I figured they'd send it to Europe to, but I guess there's the joy of region free PSPs...
cloudycat
Thankfully the speculation of Star Ocean not getting released in Europe and other PAL territories, weren't true it's now been confirmed for October 2008. I would have imported anyway but it's still good news I'm sure I'll be able to squeeze this in with Fallout 3 which is also getting an October release.

Sexy covers those are.
Friend of mine has the Japanese versions of these game, which is quite interesting, as I never have played them in Japanese.

I probably will get them, maybe just the first one, as I still have the second one on my PS2. Then again, the first disc of my game is very scratchy, so I might just get it, in case it becomes unreadable.
cloudycat
Very cool covers nice one for the post bomb. These games are must buys for me.
Pesmerga
I do have to say that they messed up Claude in the cutscenes though. He looks ridiculous. They should have used the model from the Star Ocean 2 anime, at least he looks like he is supposed to look like, same goes for Rena.

Aren;t these 360 exclusive? wink.gif

On a more serious note, I didn't actually see the fact they make up one big picture until just now XD

Multi-platform. Didn’t you hear their big E3 announcement a couple months ago?

Anyway, sorry, I had to try. xD. The covers look pretty cool though. Nothing terribly fancy, but I have to say slicing Earth in half is pretty nifty. *sigh* If only I had a PSP for these games.

I forgot if these were ports or remakes? I never played the first two Star Ocean games, so if I get a PSP I might check this out. Otherwise I'll probably play them on PS2.

Enhanced remakes, from what I know.

The original was never released outside of Japan and it was on the SNES. Only Star Ocean 2 was released on the PS1. Yeah, like Pes says they're remakes the original is getting remade using the Star Ocean 2 (PS1) engine, with new characters and cut scenes which the sequel will also get I think.

new voice overs as well, though I hope they'll do the new characters and that the original voice overs will do the original characters. Not certain if it was mentioned already.

Hands-on for First Departure:

QUOTE (PSP Fanboy)
Having played all the Star Ocean titles officially available in North America, I was more than eager to try out Square-Enix's remake of the game that started it all. As most Star Ocean fans know, the original title was released on the Super Famicom in 1996 but never saw the light of day in the US, so this PSP-exclusive remake is the first time many of us will be playing the game. Read on to find out my thoughts after spending a couple of hours with the game.

Star Ocean: First Departure begins with an anime sequence and a catchy J-pop song that really grows on you, especially after listening to it every time you turn the game on. The animated cutscenes by Production I.G really are quite beautiful and inject a shot of vigor into the narrative as you progress further into the game. You begin the game by taking control of three friends from a small town; Roddick, Dorne and Millie attempt to find a cure to a strange plague which infects a nearby town that is slowly turning all of its residents into stone. The trio climbs a dangerous mountain in hopes of retrieving a cure in the form of an herb, but Dorne has already been infected by the time they reach the summit. Out of nowhere, two representatives from a space federation appear before their eyes to offer them the chance of a cure, but they have to board a spaceship and never return to their home planet ever again. Roddick and his friends barely hesitate before they agree, hence beginning the game's awkward transition from fantasy to sci-fi.

Unfortunately, the story of the game is its weakest link, though you have to put into consideration it is twelve years old. Star Ocean is full of RPG clichés and one-dimensional characters -- you know, the hot-headed tough guy, the responsible hero, the cute-but-annoying female sidekick, to name a few. The battle system, on the other hand, is my favorite aspect of SO: First Departure. Unlike other turn-based RPGs, the game's battles play like a hack-and-slash title. Enemies still appear in random encounters, but the fights take place in a field where you directly control one of your characters who is free to walk around and attack, cast magic or use special skills in real-time. You can switch between different members of your party during the battle while the CPU guides the actions of the other members. Other aspects of the game I enjoyed were "private actions" which are optional sequences that reveal additional background information on the story and skill points you can earn which allow you to customize your character with skill sets such as stronger attacks or the ability to cook food that can restore your hit points.

Ultimately, fans of the franchise will enjoy Star Ocean's debut on the PSP. Other RPG fans seeking a game with a more lively battle system and more customizable options than other titles of the genre should also check this out. Look for the game when it is released in the US on October 21st.

So pics in the source link. Seems the release date for the US is October 21st (in case you skipped the read).

Europe will get it October 24th: Source

By the way, nice update Chalryn. Didn’t post before because I didn’t have too much to say, but it’s looking and sounding very good.

Looking forward to this one, I've only played Till the End of Time but I enjoyed the style that the game had. Plus its so rare to have a science fiction theme in an RPG. They seem to be popping up more and more in recent years though. Anyway, this one's on my wish list. I still wish an original Tales game would be released on the PSP though. There have been three or four but they've all stayed in Japan. I enjoy the nostalgic way of things, so I think I'll enjoy this one just fine. I still love LoD, Xenogears, and the PS1 FF's, so no issues here. Second one is coming out in January sometime I believe, I'm probably more anxious to play that one.
Valince
I can see SE making the final battle even more harder than the original. I played the original 2nd game and beat it many years ago and still have it. Lot of you are in for a real treat smile.gif. Awesome soundtrack too!
Pesmerga
Oh yeah, the soundtrack is a blast! I consider it to be one of Sakuraba's better works. Making the final battle (read Limiter Off) even harder would be instant death xD.
Valince
Sometimes I think the bossCallisto/Cupido? before the final is equally hard. I died to him 5 times and only won by luck. The final took like half a night. I around level 85 when I did. The game goes beyond 100, maybe that was my problem lol.
LagunaWannabe
I was interested in this game when I heard the title and whatnot, but once I saw the trailer, forget about it.

Some corny 10-year old kiddish anime style to it, totally not my scene. hahha, hope the games fun anyways for the fans tho
