Kronik
QUOTE (Kotaku)
Blizzard's senior VP of game design Rob Pardo revealed at the Paris Game Developers Conference that World of Warcraft was originally intended to be a free-to-play, advertising supported MMO. Pardo said, reacting to the impact of free MMOs in Asia on WoW's success, that "market conditions" forced them to realize that a subscription based model was the way to go.

While we're certain that Blizzard is enjoying the 10 million or so World of Warcraft subscribers forking over $13 to $15 each month in fees, it would be interesting to peek into the alternate universe where WoW was funded by ads.

While we're on subscriptions, Pardo said that one of the reasons behind MMOs failing to take off on consoles is the bite that console makers want to take out. In addition to a "lack of hard drive space, and difficulty in certifying patches" taking a percentage off the top is, literally, laughable to Pardo. Many more Pardo-isms at the full report.

Yeah look into that alternate dimension where WOW is free. O_o

Most people I know who play WoW these days play on cracked servers anyway.

Though yeah, the idea that it was originally supposed to be free is a bit disappointing to many, I'm sure. I was somewhat surprised that it was subscription-based, since StarCraft, Diablo, and the original WarCraft (I think?) all had free online play via Battle.net.

Supposedly Battle.net servers couldn't support the immenseness of WoW, so that's why they opted to go as a subscription based game. I remember reading that on a magazine, too bad I don't have it anymore.

It'd be free and #### like all the other free and #### MMO's and have a #### cash shop feature or premium feature from preventing you from fully enjoying your free and #### game.

is it possible to remove the censors from posts? i didnt get half of that last one.

it much better that wow is subscription based. open day alone crashed the servers, imagine if they didnt have the bank to repair it? wow would more than likely not be what it is today if it werent being paid for.

games that pay their way by selling ad space do nothing more than hand over creative control, or worse, they start compromising the game to either a. be cheaper to run, or b. sell their souls to advertising companies for the money. +20 Coke-a-cola of healing anyone? +55 nikes of healing?

all crap aside, keeping the game on a subscription base means not only, more money for the developers to make the game. but also more money to spend on maintaining the servers.

Yeah man, did you hear? The English language has changed so that "stealing from you" and "selling you a product" are now practically the same sentence!

Wow!

Man, those guys down the street from me at the ramen shop? They STEAL from me every time I want a bowl of ramen! What a bunch of jerks!

The people at the book store? They STEAL from me every time I go in there for a magazine!

People at the internet cafe? Dude they totally ARE STEALING FROM THEIR PATRONS that want to do something like come in and take advantage of the service they offer! Proposterous!

And did you hear? People that work hard to make an MMORPG actually want to do something so pompous as GET PAID for their work! What kind of world do we live in where goods and services are exchanged for MONEY!? WTF!?

I agree Kronik, you are totally NOT a retard and this thread is legit and Blizzard is definitely stealing from millions of "willing customers." May they rot in hell for their sins.

Bomb, whether we love you or hate you, we need more members like you globally.

For me, WoW is worth the money. I think it's actually a pretty generous deal. But then I waste too much money on games tongue.gif They aren't stealing as I and the rest of the subscribers are willingly paying them to use their product despite what that article says.

Yes, because the people at the ramen shop sell me a subscription every now and again for purchasing their product and so does the book store and the internet cafe...and all the groceries I bought and the clothes on my back and...

It's called a topic name you grandiose inarticulate national socialist get a life and don't let your fingers touch a keyboard just let them hover above the board in disgrace for a moment because you know you can never talk with the big boys because they'll laugh and ignore you just like XxXSephiroth666XxX.

Have a great day.

Oh no!
I'm under attack by one of "the big boys" who doesn't know anything about business, but can throw out buzzwords he pretends to understand, such as "socialist," when they have literally nothing to do with the topic at hand!

Yeah man, you sure showed me! laugh.gif

What does Proposterous mean?

Is it like "Preposterous" but ironically typoed so that an almost perfect sarcastic dick post makes you giggle for the wrong reasons?

It's still fully comparable with selling a product/service. Sure, you could get free ramen, but with many visitors all day they'd run out of ramen and have to close down.

Anyways, free MMO servers are usually unstable piles of horsedroppings.

What does Proposterous mean?

It means that guys like you, who make like seven grammatical errors in under half a post (second paragraph) and then follow me around the internet waiting for me to make a typo so that you can be a cock about it...just aren't cut out to post with "The Big Boys" like our man Kronik here. Some day, with practice, maybe we can work our way into his league though. Maybe.

Perhaps this little tiff you're trying to start with this uptightness about typos you've newly adopted is a good start. I have officially hopped on the bandwagon!

In the mean time, I have discovered that the cable company is stealing money out of my pocket. My friend has his TV rigged up with some box that gets a lot of channels that he doesn't pay for, but I'm stuck shelling out a monthly price to have access to it. WTF!? I called the cable company and they won't let me have it for free. It's cool though, I called the police about it and I'm takin' their asses to court.

Agreed, at least there is someone to have an intellectual conversation with. TED had a point though about free MMO's and that they would probably charge you for extra features and advancements. Like cable versus public television. But that's off topic.

You are awesome, please teach me how to be a complete douche bag. I can be an #####, its easy, but you take it to a complete level of expertise and really make people want to punch you in the face, I think its a great quality.

Now what else can you bring to the table besides that, even though its already a worthy contribution since there is such a lack of jackasses on the internet.

EDIT: I forgot to add

XOXO

Good job in making a big fuss about something totally pointless. I never thought you guys had it in you!
