According to GoNintendo, the latest issue of Nintendo Power reveals the proud return of the Castlevania series to consoles. Castlevania Judgment is, believe it or not, a 3D fighter, pitting classic characters from throughout the series against each other in mortal combat. Yes, not at all the exact opposite of what Castlevania fans have been asking for.

This just seems like a bad idea. I would still be curious as to how the game would play, but this is not what I want in a new Castlevania.

This is worse than hearing that the Wii is getting a Castlevania game I won't be able to play.

Wait...

Why's Alucard the one getting his ass kicked? Oh well. A fighting game of any kind is just something I wouldn't really want from Castlevania. Castlevania's good as is (granted, I haven't played more recent titles, so I'm referring to stuff like SotN), and I really don't think a fighter does it much justice. (That is, unless it's somehow a very unique fighter that blows others out of the water, which I doubt it is.) And a 3-D fighter, at that. I'm more of a fan of 2-D fighters in the first place, but I like the idea of a 2-D Castlevania fighter more than a 3-D one, since I'm fond of the classic side-scrolling Castlevania look. I think it'd be kinda fitting, if you look at it like that.

Anyway, haven't really been paying attention to Castlevania lately, but to find that the next title is a fighter is still pretty disappointing.

I just came to the realization that Konami doesn't have a popular fighting game franchise (only fighting game that I can think of that they made was that N64 fighter where you made your fighters). I guess they want to expand the types of genres they produce. Maybe that's why they decided to try their had at a new fighting game , stick the Castlevania licenses on it to attract fans of the series.

They also made the Rumble Roses games, if you wanna include those as "fighters," though they were the wrestling-type. Female wrestling, at that. (Yeah, I guess they know how to get the male audience's attention, heh.) Other than that, I'd pretty much agree.

As part of a ton of Castlevania Judgment coverage, IGN interviewed the man in charge of the franchise, Koji "IGA" Igarashi. You can probably guess the content of the first question.

IGA explained what possessed him to make a 3D fighter with some fairly smart reasoning: people want to swing the Wiimote to whip, and he decided it would be best to implement those kinds of mechanics in a shorter-session game. "... I realized, with the 3D action style, I would be able to incorporate intervals so that players can rest and this would allow players to enjoy the swinging action of the Wii Remote." IGA also mentioned that part of the Elebits/Dewy team is working on Judgment, which should at least ensure lovely visuals.

IGN's hands-on with the game gave us a bit of morning light to vanquish the horrible night of our skepticism, describing Judgment as more of a Power Stone free-roaming vs. action game than a traditional Tekken or Virtua Fighter-like game.

Honestly I think any long time fan would be turned off by this idea.

I'm guessing the only reason this game has gotten any press time is because of the Castlevania name. And anyone who is a huge Castlevania fan will pick it up even if it gets horrible reviews. I'm still cautious and will be taking a wait and see approach. I actually thought the 3D Castlevania's on PS2/Xbox were pretty good and I would gladly pick up a new one.
The Evil Dead
I'm a huge Castlevania fan and I won't be picking this up. Even if I had a Wii I wouldn't.

They should invest the resources on creating a new Castlevania title in the vein ( no pun intended ) of the rest of the series instead of this nonsense. I don't know if this is cheaper for them to throw at us or what, but it's a total joke and an insult to fans.

I mean what does Konami know about making a fighter anyway?
Grahf
Yeah, I have to say as a moderately to fairly large fan of the franchise, this idea just doesn't appeal to me. I don't feel like there are enough people to make a good fighter, and I would rather have a 2D exploration based Castlevania anyway.
Finn
A Castlevania fighting game...what kind of genius came up with that idea? It doesn't make any sense and it will definitely be a failure. It just doesn't work.

Here a (brief) hands-on from IGN, with a trailer at the end.

August 20, 2008 - Instead of making a traditional Castlevania game, Koji Igarashi is instead putting a team to work on a fighting game featuring the Castlevania characters from games' past. The last time we played the game was at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, and judging from how short the demo was at Games Convention, the version here is most likely among the same version that players could play at E3 just a few short weeks ago.

In the Games Convention build, you can choose to play as one of three characters: Simon, Alucard, and Maria, each with their own abilities and special attacks. The demo was either a single round single player arcade mode, or a single round two player Versus mode with the same objective: beat the other guy or gal into submission using button or motion attacks on the Wii remote.

The game has very simple fighting mechanics: basic button presses or a generic waggle motion for attacks that can be strung together in combos. It has an awkward, low, PowerStone like camera system that makes it difficult to judge distances for the person in the back of the arena.

We'll have more on the game when we get a chance to play a newer build.

It looks as expected. Might be fun. I tend to play some anime based fighting games, DBZ, Naruto, Bleach, so I might try this one out as well.
Kestrel
Although the visuals look horrible, to a point where you wonder "oh next-gen?" even more than you normally would with a wii, it looks quite fun. Even so, I'll wait till some people have actually played it enough to give proper judgements on the control and such, which sounds a bit wacky.

I can't say I'm the most faithful Castlevania fan, but I'll be giving it a try. We need more innovation and risky ideas out there.

Though you're looking pretty Light there, Simon, pretty Misa there Maria, and pretty Sephiroth there, Alucard.
