So, you've gone and watched the latest and greatest there is to be seen.
You're caught up completely with Bleach.
And Naruto.
Manga AND Anime.
So, what now? Anime didn't start off as a trend a few years ago. It's been around longer than most forum-goers here have been alive. Ever wonder what stuff was like ten years ago? Twenty? Maybe even thirty?
Post up your favorite "old-school" series and the year it aired, and share why you like it, etc.
For moi?
Gunbuster (1988) - The first anime Hideaki Anno ever worked on in an executive role, this anime is a cornerstone for a number of Gainax anime series that would be produced in the years to come. Notable influences include Evangelion and Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann. Though it's only a mere 6 episodes long, there's plenty of story and the subject of faster-than-light travel ends up being one of the focal points of the show. (IE, 5 minutes spents at sub-light speed means 5 months pass on Earth.) It's amazingly well animated for a show made when anime was mainly still drawn by hand. (Evangelion was one of the first to use some computer generated effects.)
Sorcerous Stabber Orphen (1998) - Not nearly as 'old', Orphen is your typical fantasy anime. But not. It's overlooked because it outwardly appears to be mediocre. But the story and characters are much deeper than that, and the main character might try to come off as a tough guy, but in the end has his friends at the forefront of his thoughts.
Appleseed - Manga - (1985) - By now, if you've been watching anime for the last ten years or so, you'd know the name Masamune Shirow. This is his first real work, a manga that follows a somewhat similar line to Ghost in the Shell. In fact, Appleseed loans almost all of it's technical elements to GitS. What makes this stand out are, not surprisingly, the characters and setting. Post-WWIII, with plenty of Cyborgs and mayhem to go around. Like much of Masamune's work, Appleseed merges elements of the cyberpunk and mecha genres with a heavy dosage of politics, philosophy, and sociology.

I like alot of the older anime. but my fav have to be Starzinger (spaceketeers for americans)!
Starzinger: was made by Leiji Matsumoto and was aired in japan 1978-1979.
It is mostly based on the "journey to the west" but in space.
this was the anime that introduced me to anime, saw it as swedish dub as kid, these days it is treated as cult by those who saw it as kid.
I would like to mention that this series have had an uniqe development on the net (atleast I never heard of anything similar)!
many years the only version you could download on the net was the 24 episodes from the swedish dub (originaly 73 in japan) but here comes the interesting part, thanks to fans pressing about the series, someone acctually found the original raw anime and subbed it, not many episodes out so far (as far as I know)

Ninja Scroll (Movie) (1993) - When your cable company let you have the movie channels free for a month, did you not get the chance to watch Ninja Scroll? I sure did and loved it. Though, back when I watched, I was a child and couldn't exactly appreciate the movie. Just a lot of fighting that I found cool and animated breasts. That's all I remember since I haven't watch the movie and years, but it's one of the classic anime movies I watched and loved.
Casshan: Robot Hunter (OVA) (1993) - I vaguely remember Casshan, but it had to be one of my personal favorite animes to air on Sci-Fi back when Sci-Fi aired anime around 12 A.M. and 3 A.M. I should check it out again since I barely remember the OVA, but I did love it when I watched. It's been over 10-15 years since I've watched. I do need to check it out again.
Bubblegum Crisis (OVA) (1987) - An anime OVA older than myself! I only watched this OVA recently as two years ago. I wasn't a huge fan, but this was the original of one of my favorite anime, which is Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. Not to mention this OVA is incomplete, which is terrible. Though, this OVA is every thing done right with the characters of Bubblegum Crisis. After watching it, I can't believe what happen with half the characters in 2040.
Bubblegum Crash (OAV) (1991) - I found Crash to be excellent. It had Largo as the main enemy. He was better than every other villain the series introduced. Crisis OVA likely would have been better if it finished, but nobody can top Largo as a villain in Bubblegum Crisis series. Not one.
Oh, just a side note, both OVA's didn't whore out Priss to be the main character like 2040. Both OVA's pushed for the team work and focus on the Knight Sabers as a team, unlike 2040 that made Priss the main focus. When I look back on it, I hate that they did. Especially what happen to Syliva in 2040 compared to OVA's. Such a disappointment.

The oldest my "old school" gets is Sailor Moon. By far it was my daily obsession. *_* I would watch it every morning before heading off to kindergarten, then obsess over it more by going to a cousin's house to re-enact scenes from the anime. (I was, of course, Sailor Venus.) I collected dolls, stickers, posters...I even had a bento box, a washcloth, and a binder. *___* Enamored!
And I don't know if these count, but I was all hardcore into Pokemon, Digimon, and Cardcapters (Lols@english title) too.

For me it'd be Digimon (though anything past the second season was abhorred in my opinion...), if not because I seriously haven't really seen much else. I can't for the life of me remember when it came out though. 1998, maybe?
My brother and I had been switching through (very limited) channels looking for Pokémon when we ran across an episode of Digimon; we ended up watching the episode til the end and missed Pokémon (didn't really care, either). Unfortunately I can't really say why I like Digimon. I just sort of...got hooked on it. Haven't really watched much other anime (in fact, after Digimon went past season two, I stopped watching cartoons in general). I dunno...I liked the art, story, characters...
