I know I could've downloaded off Veoh or watched it off other streaming sites, I really wanted to watch on screen with my friends, and considering it was to be just a recap of the first couple of episodes I didn't have any motivation in watching this. Well during AX 08 I watched the movie in it's entirety, and I must say.... I'm impressed.

The Visuals
With it being far away from the 90s, one would expect an anime made now would have animation quality to be superior than animes made 10 years before, and yes the visuals are there. The 3D animation seems a bit out of placed, but during the Ramiel fight, I found them to be quite appropriate. In anycase, it was a visual feast for Eva fans and new viewers, becuse quite frankly it was just so damn pretty to watch.

The Story
As I said before the new movies were merely a recap of the first couple of episodes. Though a few a few minor tweaks to the story has been done. One of which would be revealing Lillith really early into the story . Anno made it a point to make viewers empathize with Shinji, from the way how each scene went with his narratives or how others (and he himself) reacts to his actions and events around them. Even my friend, who casually watched the series and never finished, actually had a new perspective on Shinji's character. Rather than just being a whiny lil' bitch (which he originally thought Shinji was), he came to see Shinji as just your ordinary kid who's been forced into that situation. Overall I was just really impressed with how Anno recreated everything to make it refreshing and new, the only downfall to the plot was how everything felt a bit too rushed. Then again it was a movie.

Overall: 8.9/10

I have never watched Evangelion so would I you recommend that I do? I have heard people say that it is overrated and others that praise it as being one of the best Anime ever.

I'm gonna team up with AnimePaul and ask the same question. Some people tell me Evangelion is a masterpiece, yet there are others who call it complete garbage. I'm mainly interested for two reasons:

- Apparently the story is similar to Xenogears' in some ways
- Slightly implied shounen ai (boy love) between Shinji and Kaworu

So yeah, I'm also wondering if this is recommended or not.

@ AnimePaul
I wouldn't say it's the best, but the way how everything written, and how some of the characters interact with each other has been copied off from many other series using this as a basis. Since this was made for a newer audience, I'd recommend watching this and making that judgement whether it's good or not for yourself.

@ Xerno
1. I haven't played Xenogears, so I wouldn't know.

2. I wouldn't say Shinji is gay, but more of a attention-sexual person, considering he falls for anyone who pays attention to him. I should know, I'm almost the same way. Plus it's still too early in the story for those to come up, expect it to happen though within Evangelion 2.0.

I've only watched the first 10 episodes of the original anime and I can honestly say I love it, not sure about a masterpiece but there is something special about it for sure. I'm not a big fan of Mecha-type anime which is why I've only just started watching it. I need to watch some more of it to be sure but I have a feeling this will be one of my favourites. It has aged well indeed considering it's over 10 years old as well. It has a huge mix, on the surface it is just a shallow anime about a big company who own big robots that kids pilot and have to destroy big monsters, but it goes so much deeper in all other directions. Not only is there the mystery of Nerv, it's personnel and the Evas themselves but on the complete opposite end of the scale it's a boy coming to terms with growing up, puberty and the opposite sex (or maybe the same sex...). Basically it is a deep anime with a lot to it, I'd recommend and I'm only 10 episodes in.

Not sure about the boy-love yet Xaoino... but I'm not ruling it out.

Xaoino? That must be hard to say. xD Anyway, I looked something up on Wikipedia. I was quite sure that Shinji and Kaworu had kissed eachother at some point. It turns out that they do indeed kiss, but only in the manga:

"The manga also makes enormous changes to Shinji's relationship with Kaworu. (...) In vol. 10, Kaworu uses a kiss to stop Shinji from hyperventilating during a nightmare, and makes advances toward Shinji which he flatly refuses."

So I suppose if I want shounen ai, I should read the manga instead. xD But I might give the anime a try in the near future, just not right now (still busy with gaming).
