I don't think I really need to say anything. It looks amazing and should hold the grit of the games... And Mark Wahlberg as Payne... I'm sold.

Definitely could shape up to be one of the better video games gone movie. This is just the trailer, but it looks like it's really captured the atmosphere of the game and Max Payne as a character. I was a huge fan of the original game, and this trailer definitely got a chill going in me.
Voyou San
im in line to see it, trust me.. it will be good
MimiPRGameFreak
Looks good. I just hope it's better. I still think Hitman was a good movie based on a video game so far. Next would be Resident Evil.

I hope so. I hope it doesn't go bad like Super Mario Brothers. Now that was the worst movie ever.
The Evil Dead
I think this movie is going to separate itself from the rest of the video game flicks... It has Marky Mark and from what I gather in the trailer a competent production from the special effects to the script.

The writer they got on board is no hack, Marky Mark is in it ( Even if you don't like him he's a big Hollywood name and doesn't do corny like the more B list stars of our video game films do ) it's shot by a director that has a good feel for films ( Even though I don't like the other films he's been in ) and it has a fairly competent production company behind it.

I mean it could go horribly wrong... But I think not, sir.
Dragon Brigade
I’m honestly not really familiar with the series, but what I watched from the trailer it looked good. Doubt I’ll go to see it though, unless someone in my family rents it down the road.
LagunaWannabe
Here's why it'll be good:

1. Max Payne was ALREADY designed like a movie. It's self narration. It's personal inner thought. It's not some run around and kill things game that we have to create our own image of who our character is and what the plot may be.

2. The game is like a comic book. Think of how many good movies have come about from the comic books. It's because comic books lay out a certain style and feel, and it's easy to duplicate that in a movie.

3. Max Payne is a VERY realistic storyline with a heartfelt character and great drama. I loved the game very much, and with Mark playing the lead role there's no doubt it'll be spectacular.

P.S. I havent even WATCHED the Trailer yet, but m about to, and im already writing these things before I've seen anything. Great game to make a movie out of.
cloudycat
Yeah, it looks good. I like Mark Wahlberg and Beau Bridges(Jeff's brother) is in it too so it has a decent cast and I just found out it's the same director who did Behind Enemy Lines and I thoroughly enjoyed that film so I'll be waiting on this one which is a first for me with video game to movie adaptations.
Denim
Isn't this going to be rated PG13?

This movie was planned since the game came out, and probably before. Check the instruction manual for the first game xD.
Razael
I have never played the games, always wanted to, never did. Maybe I can find it at the store next time i am there or order it and play it before the movie because it looks like its gonna rock the ##### out of your skulls.

I dare say it, admit it and feel no shame, but I am a big Marky Mark fan, like not to the extent of my Bale mania, but I still think the dude is awesome.

So yeah, I am going to the theater.
The Evil Dead
Yeah it is going to be PG-13. I'm not that thrilled about it but the trailer makes it look so promising. It really looks like the film captures the feel of the games.

Both games are consistently in bargain bins for less than $5 =D.
LunarMaster
Although I'm sure they're going to remove the excessive cussing and violence from the game with that rating, I still think it's going to turn out great. I kind get a hint of Paycheck which is a very good sign.
Dragon Brigade
New trailer if anyone's interested. I think this is really looking pretty cool so far. Might go see it come October, if I can get a family member to go with me.
Chalryn
I never played the games, so I was rather surprised when I saw a trailer for this on MTOD and found it was more than just guys running around with guns. (Seriously, I'm getting tired of movies based on shooters.) I don't know how accurate this movie may be to the games, but it certainly looks worthwhile so far. From the few roles I've seen him play, and from others praising him, Mark Wahlberg seems like a good person to cast in here. I'm interested in these Norse mythology references, as well. (Not only the Valkyries, but I saw some sign in a trailer that quite obviously said "AESIR," too.)

I'm not sure if I'll get around to seeing this in theaters, but if I have the option to, it certainly seems worthwhile. Otherwise, I'll probably see it on DVD at some point.

IT'S PG-13!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU'RE NOT THRILLED ABOUT IT!!!! That means I'll actually get to see it!!!! YAY!!!!!!!

I do wonder though, I played both Max Paynes, I wouldn't think the movie based off it would be PG-13 though.... they must have thrown out the f-bombs and some of the blood.
Hugo
I saw the trailer for this movie and I was just like OMFG PWNAGE!!!!111!!

haha no, but seriously this looks really ##### good. I love Mark Wahlberg. Too bad on the PG-13 rating, but it will probably still be a great movie.

When Ludacris is in the cast, you know it's going to be great.

Max Payne movie director upset with possible R rating

You may have noticed that the trailers for the upcoming movie version of Remedy's Max Payne game series don't have a rating yet, even though the movie is a little more than a month away from release. That's because the Twentieth Century Fox production is trying to get a PG-13 rating for the ultra-violent film. However the MPAA ratings board has slapped an early cut of the film with an R rating which will almost certainly lower its potential take at the box office.

Das Gamer has a chat with the film's director John Moore who expressed frustration over the ratings fight with the MPAA with Max Payne. Moore states, "They said to me, the movie feels R. And I said, "What the f*** is that, a group therapy session?" You can't do that. They're meant to judge content, not intent. They said the movie felt dark." Max Payne is due in theaters on Oct 17.

Source

Bad news for me, good for some if this goes through...
Theferrell
oh laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaame. It "feels" dark.

Well, the scene from "Enchanted" when the princess walks around NYC at midnight "feels" dark, so we should give it an R-rating. Screw the fuzzy chipmunks and good positive morals the movie brings out, the part is a little too "dark" for me.

Give me a friggin break. If Titanic can get a PG-13 rating with the sex-scene, Max Payne should be PG-13 with it's "dark" feeling.

Also, the director has a good point for wanting to make it PG-13. That rating scores more bucks than R movies because of the accessibility of ages. Also, FYI, Rated G movies make, on average, more money than R movies do. (or so I've heard)
Dragon Brigade
If anything, I honestly think The Dark Knight should have gotten an R rating, or at least something a bit higher than PG-13. There were so many little kids in the theater I went to (5-11; though it is understandably "parental guidance for kids under thirteen", but still...I wouldn't take them if they're under ten, but that's just me.), and the movie itself was pretty intense as far as the violence went (or so I thought. Much more than your average PG-13 movie at least.).

So I dunno. These ratings systems get pretty messed up sometimes, if I might (obviously) say. But we'll see I guess...
Dragon Brigade
(Update)

Never mind, it is getting a PG-13 rating. Hoo-ray.

The Evil Dead
Man, when I hear that music each time in the trailer I get goosebumps. I pray it's going to get an R rating... As they've yet to rate it, but I'm not holding my breath. It SEEMS action packed enough, so if not maybe there will be a directors cut? I know they're wanting a PG-13 rating with this film.

It just looks great though. This is probably one of the few movies I'm excited about for the rest of the year.

Times where different back then, we didn't have to put up with this, "Oh there's too much sex an violence in the media" malarkey. I still remember an old Romeo and Juliet movie that had a full on sex scene was given a PG rating.

As for Max Payne, It's Mark Wahlberg, I'll see it.

*Applauds* Someone who's brave enough to admit they watched that movie!

I'll most likely see this, but I still have my doubts. This IS a video-game-to-movie adaption after all.

The movie rating system is such a joke. A film can get an automatic rating boost and barred from young viewers all because it has a little scene of someone smoking, but yet a movie featuring a guy with half of his face graphically burnt off as well as other sordid little things gets a PG-13 and a market to target children.

Haa, thanks for the props. I actually like that movie. It was really funny and is how a quazi-musical should be.

But seriously, I think the movie rating system is screwed up anyways because the majority of the "good" looking movies that come out are R anyways... so I don't go see them. It's really good to see a movie that I REALLY want to see be PG13. It's refreshing.
Dragon Brigade
Saw this on IGN and thought I’d post it up...

QUOTE
But lest you fear you may never see the darker version of Max Payne, Moore has a plan up his sleeve. "There's what I call the Gamer Dedicated Cut of the movie. It's a little slower and a little more atmospheric. There are some rougher edges on it, but it's not going to be a bloodfest. I want this to be the Max Payne that I set out to shoot. It's not that I wanted to release one version in the theaters and make a cheap buck by following up with a blood-drenched DVD version. The movie you see in the theaters will be an intense experience and the movie you see on DVD will be as intense an experience with some extra sensibilities for people who really adore the game."

Source

Guess there’ll be a Director’s Cut type thing.
Theferrell
Sounds good. I really liked the dramatic parts of the game... although VERY trippy and weird and somehow messed up, I thought it brought out great emotions that I hope make it onto the movie, and if not, onto the "dedicated gamers cut" (great idea smile.gif )
The Evil Dead
I figured there'd be a directors cut. This movie is no doubt an R film, and they wanted to sell a few more tickets by making it PG-13 in theaters. Kinda sucks, but I don't care so long as there's a more true version available on DVD.

Also, while it may not be blood drenched, I'd imagine there's a lot of violence we won't be seeing in the PG-13 version... Which doesn't make sense to me considering the content of the games. Max Payne shoots a lot of people, that's kinda part of the story.
LagunaWannabe
Yeah PG-13 makes no sense to me. It's not like the game is recent, and it was geared toward 12 and 13 year olds, who by now have aged a couple of years, so they should be able to go see the movie.

The movie was R to begin with, and it was out years ago, so even if someone was 15 when they played it, they're old enough now to go see it.

Not that violence makes a movie, but for dramatic effect it can totally alter the feel of the movie. Imagine "300" with no blood. Like, seriously?
Demiurge
The rating system really needs to get a revamp, like what they did in the early 70's-80's. Maybe that's why films are getting an inaccurate label, because views on violence and the like are different and changing. Look at Jaws or Spaceballs for example, both those movies are still rated PG, since it was before the updated system we have now.
LagunaWannabe
I think the rating system in general needs to be redesigned in general, I agree. We need to redefine what is considered "too mature".

I distinctly remember one movie where I found the rating system... interesting, to say the least. When Titanic came out, I remember there was that nude scene, the sex scene, and they said the f-word various times throughout the movie. I remember being like around that age of 13 or so when I went to see it, and I was just like, "Wow! This is cool for PG-13!"

Same goes for Jurassic Park. I remember all the people-eating, gore, and intensely frightening scenes as a 13 year old, and I just found is surprising that the rating was PG-13.

At the same time, it's tough to judge how "mature" kids are now adays. There is a huge percentage of early teens experimenting with sex, drugs, swearing, etc, so of course when they see it in a movie it's not like they're being corrupted of their innocence, but at the same time just becuase they know about it does it mean we have to embrace that fact and not regulate? I dunno.
Dragon Brigade
There is one analogy that I rather like, and it is the frog in boiling water. If you throw a frog in boiling water, it’s obviously going to try jumping out. But if you put the frog in the water and slowly change the temperature, it is simply going to adapt itself and will stay in the water until it gets so hot that it dies.

This opinion is going to differ with anyone you ask (because we all have our different views on life), but the one thing you’d have to ask yourself is if you’d want *your* kids to watch PG-13 movies before they’re thirteen (some are naturally not bad movies, but as a generalization, most would probably be inappropriate for younger children). And this is assuming they have sex, drugs, swearing, among other things. Does a seven year old really need to see a man and a woman having sex on the big screen? Does he really need to hear someone swearing all the time?

I know it differs between people, but generally, if kids are exposed to something that is beyond their maturity level, they fall flat on their faces later, because they try following the example. A little kid clings to the things (s)he sees/reads at a younger age, and (s)he can shape their life around it. I am by no means a psychologist (or psychiatrist), but most times when you have sex or drugs being misused (and consequently swearing, etc.), it’s when the kids have been exposed to it from a very young age and they just sort of pick it up as an okay lifestyle to misuse sex/drugs/etc.

And wow, I’m almost getting off-topic here, haha. xD. So to wrap up, yes kids will know about these types of things at varying ages, but in my opinion I don’t really see it as helping/disciplining them by just throwing them into that hot water when they’re young. I have no idea if anyone else here would necessarily agree with me, but I thought I’d throw it out just for the thought.
Vilagen
So, yeah, not getting into the rating debate right now.

I was somewhat excited about this movie when I first heard about it. I saw a friend play it, and it looked rather good, and I know some of the story. What kind of bothers me is that the film looks nothing like the impression that the game left me, the story that is? Valkyries, the devil raising an army or whatever? I guess all of that could be figurative, but I liked the whole idea of the original Max Payne of being about stopping a crime syndicate while getting revenge of course.

Of course, I could be wrong about what the game was about since I never played through it, but it just seems that the movie is a lot different to the game's story.

Either way, even if I was interested in it, I doubt I would see it anytime soon since I do not know a single person down here to go with. I'm sure it will have its moments, but I'm probably skipping out.
LagunaWannabe
Saw the movie just now. Meh. It was good. Not great. Not what I expected from Max Payne.

It didn't have the comic-bookish feel that the game did, nor was it as dark as I would have thought. Fights were few and far between, and only one bullet-time in the whole movie, definitely was disappointed with that.

I went in there expecting a shooter film, action packed, instead it was more drama and plot set-up than anything.

I'll say this, the last 30 minutes of the movie absolutely rocked, hard core, to the max, perfect. It's just unfortunate it took them that long to get to that point, and that it wasn't incorporated throughout the whole movie like I'd hoped.

Not to forget the whole plot is twisted around too. Definitely not appreciated. At all. Some major things left out or changed.
The Evil Dead
That kinda sucks. I was hoping for some action but honestly when I saw the rating I figured it'd be gone. Hopefully there's some more in the directors cut, but it's a shame they sorta let down on the action.

Ah well. I'm seeing it tomorrow.
LagunaWannabe
Yeah in hindsight I was really disappointed with the movie. Like I said, the last 30 minutes kicked arse hardcore it was amazing, but not enough bullet time, imagery from the game, or plotline from the game. Mona Sax was absolutely useless in the movie, and they twisted around so many things, theres no mafia family, no Albert Woden, nothing. Here's what I mean with my problems with imagery:

The scene in the beginning when his family is killed... You hear the baby crying, his wife screaming and literally being killed as he stands outside the door. There's the phone ring, the blood on the wall, the bloody baby crib.

The scene in the game:

The scene in the movie (It just doesnt have the same nightmarish effect):

And check out the game concept art compared to the movie concept art:

The imagery is just way off. This is more what I expected, like from 300:

They take the memorable scenes and images and actually put them into the movie. They don't do this at all with Max Payne. It just loses all its feel.
Demiurge
It's unfortunate that a movie with such potential went to waste like this. I figured it was going to be no way near as good or even similar to the game. That's the glory of Hollywood for you.

Were there any good trailers at least?
The Evil Dead
Those images match up fine.

He looks real psychotic in the sixth one down. You can tell he's going to be having some fun. laugh.gif

Funny, I think the opposite. While it can be questionable as a good movie, it did work for me in most parts. I could see/imagine every scene put as one of those comic-book style cutscenes that the game had. As for bullet time, his actual movements were pretty true to it, he did alot of bullet time type stuff. Tbh, that bullet-time was probably one of the poorer things in the movie wink.gif

Don't forget the game IS more a noir-type drama and secondary shooter. Well, sort of. It's hard to make it with both.

I think the strongest point of the movie was the characters. While some acting is questionable, and them mixing both the first and second game together into the movie went kinda awry as to changing the story, also questionable. But I thought it worked pretty well.

In conclusion it wasn't in the movie sense very good, but it wasn't horrible either. That and no closure in the end of the movie kind of ticked me off. Felt like they ran out of time in the movie so a bunch of stuff was just rushed in.

I don't really know what to think about the movie, but I was entertained. smile.gif
