Although I'm sure a lot of people aren't usually into manga series by mangaka, but it's worth a shot. <:D
When you're looking for a new series to read and get into, are there certain series you especially *loveee* and would go out of your way to read if it was done by a certain mangaka? Or is something like that irrelevant to you?

Er...Forgive my noobish question, but are mangaka basically the artists behind drawing the manga? Or are they something else? I mean, I don't really read manga either way, but I was just wondering.

Usually I go after works of certain mangakas because I know the possibility of it being to my taste and me enjoying it is higher. So in short, yes, I do buy manga based on mangaka. Here's a list of mangaka I like. ^^

- Kaori Yuki (eg. Angel Sanctuary, Count Cain)

- Oh! Great (eg. Air Gear, Tenjou Tenge)
- You Higuri (eg. Cantarella)
- Shiho Sugiura (eg. Ice Demon's Tale, Silver Diamond) [BL mangaka]
- Yamane Ayano ( i think let's not name some ) [yaoi mangaka]
- Yuu Watase (eg. Fushigi Yuugi, FY: Genbu Kaiden, Ayashi no Ceres)

this does not really apply to me with manga, for when i do read them its just based on the cover art and the story, how interesting it sounds.

this applies to me more on anime and the art style having to fit my taste a lot more

Les Gouttes de Dieu sounds so pretty. *o* I'm tempted to look for it and read it.
I only really have like, 2 mangaka's that I keep an eye out for when I read stuff.
I'm a huge huge huge huge
YAZAWA AI fan, as you guys may or may not know. :D I literally love everything she comes out with, and I'm always on the search for new bits of Yazawa Ai stuff. Series I've read by her are
Paradise Kiss,
Nana,
Kagen no Tsuki,
Gokinjo Monogatari, and
Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai. *___*
Another I really like is
SETONA MIZUSHIRO. I haven't read as many of her works as I'd like to, the ones I have read are ones I really ended up enjoying.
Maison de Beauties,
Diamond Head, and especially
After School Nightmare.

Norihiro Yagi (Claymore) - Awesome art style. Detailed and gory.
Kouta Hirano (HELLSING) - Rough, dark, and gritty. I can't wait for the next volume.
CLAMP (Magic Knights Rayearth, X1999, etc.) - Need I say anything?
Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (Neon Genesis Evangelion) - I've always loved Sadamoto's art style, when I first watched Nadia.
Kaori Yuki (Angel Sanctuary) - Kaori is an awesome artist. Her stuff is just plain pretty.
Satoru Akahori / Ray Omishi (Sorcerer Hunters) - The art isn't bad, but the story is hilarious.
Sunao Yoshida (Trinity Blood) - Surprisingly superior to the anime adaptation, since the manga is based on the original novels.

I use the ultimate way of getting into a series.
RANDOM.
Majority of the series I liked were chosen at random, prior any knowledge of the series beforehand. Series chosen because of mangaka are a good resource into knowing which art styles and story telling you like best, but there are times to which when mangakas disappoint you (an example from my experience, Gohou Drug).

Lol, Gohou Drug has pretty obvious shonen-ai tendencies. It's quite known for that... actually, CLAMP is quite known for doing that. They also like inordinate amount of blood, feathers and flower petals drawn in very dramatic manner. And angsty main characters.
This is one advantage of going into a series because of the mangaka, you kinda know some of the things to expect.

I don't follow any particular mangaka really. The only one that I've read more than one series from that I'm aware of is Oh! Great (Air Gear, Tenjou Tenge).
I don't really look for new animes or manga though. I more or less stumble unto them, and check it out if something seems interesting.

I just didn't like the story-telling, I had no problem with the Shounen-Ai tendencies. I just couldn't figure out what was happening most of the time, that's why I stoped reading the series.

I would totally go out of my way to read a series if it were done by one of the favorite mangakas.
Unfortuately, I often forget the names 0.o. I remember the series just fine, but when I am looking at manga to get I end up forgetting some of the names of the artists.
Lets see
My favorite are
Umezu Kazou (Drifting Classroom, Scary book, Orochi Blood)
Junji Ito (Uzumaki, Gyo, Meusuem of terror)
CLAMP (Angelic Layer)
Shirow Masamune (Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell)
Shou Tajima and Eiji Otsuka(MPD Psycho)
Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata (Deathnote)
Tadashi Kawashima and Adashitoka (Alive)
Takehiko Inoue (Vagabound)
Idata shihiko or Tatsuhiko Ida (Dareka ga gakkou to naku)
Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima (Lone Wolf and Cub)
Masaki Segawa (Basilisk:Kouga Ninja Scrolls, Yagyu Ninja Scrolls)
Norihiro Yagi (claymore)
As far as Korean comic artists go
I really like joongki park (shaman warrior)
That is more or less it for my favorite. There are a few more but I dont feel like looking their name up.
