I have an idea for a dreamers book club that could be ran monthly (a new book every month!).
I'm wondering whether some members have the resources (be it a library or a fat paycheck) to make this idea work, and whether people would be interested enough to follow through with it.
The basic idea is to have a new thread every month dedicated to a book (books will be written in english or at least have an available translation) in the club, the book can be chosen by a variety of members congregating in this thread, or PM, or whatever, and the thread itself people can respond, discuss, and detail progress and whatnot.
The details are a bit fuzzy, but I'm hoping you all get the gist of it all. Thoughts?

I think it's a good idea. I pretty much already told you this, but I wouldn't mind joining it and trying out a few books here and there. (Via library, of course. And only when I finish Brave Story. <___<)
Would there be a problem of spoilers, you think? I mean, we do have the spoilers tag, but imagine having a mess of blacked out text in every post and responding to that with blacked out text and so on.

I like it but I dont think I can be a part of it since I have to get my english books through amazon and take about a week to two to get to me so when i get around to start the book, everybody will be at the middle.
I think this can only mean that...dammit Rhadamanthus, you win again.
One day I'll get you, you'll see, just you wait.

I think it would be a great idea, but you would have to tell people about 2 weeks in advance... I live in a small town, so my library has few books that are actually worth reading... and the ones that it does have are so incredibly old that I believe that few other libraries across the country would actually have them in stock. so I would probably have to order them for myself.. and seeing as how I do get paid too well for my job, I could totally manage it... although I doubt many could...

Great idea, I'll take part, as long as the chosen books aren't too uncommon. Do you reckon there will be a limit on the kind of variety? Like will Mangas or Poetry books etc. be excluded/included?

I'm up for it. I haven't really been reading much except for the odd book here or there, so it'd be nice to get out to the library sometime and get reading on a more regular basis. Not sure if my library carries manga though, so if you do go that route I'll either have to pass for that month or go buy it if possible.
But yeah, I think it'd be a fun thing to do. =).

I wouldn't want manga to be a part of this, after all, manga in particular is ridiculously short (I could read a volume in about 20 minutes, tbh.), its not something I'd really consider to be "Literature" as much as "comic books", (which have their own artistic merit, don't kill me!). If you were to say "Oh, lets read the entire series this month!" It would grow to become ridiculously expensive or difficult in the long run for all members to participate.
As far as poetry books, Not too sure. I can't say I'm fond of it, but it depends what the other members think.

What about borrowing the translated books in your library?
I think this could be a good idea. I might hop on, unless the book is too strange. And like Dream of Purity mentioned, it's probably a good idea to decide on a book about two weeks in advance, so that everyone gets a chance to get a hold of them in time.

Yeah well since everyone won't finish at the same time, and people probably want to discuss the book while they're reading it, it'll probably be a good idea to use spoiler tags here and there. And also what chapter you are on before you start typing. That way someone can safely decide if they want to read the blacked out part or not. I guess it could end up being a lot of black text. But if you put out up to which chapter the text below relates to, then I think it's only necessary to black out major spoilers.
If it's a chapter that you haven't gotten to yet, just don't read the post below. Sound good?

Like most libraries, they only carry computers, magazines, and coffee. And the obligatory Librarian Chick. Looking for love by the copy machine.
Yeah.

That works for me as it's extremely hard to find any mangas where I live. Hence why I've never read a single one before. I'm not really too fond of poetry books either, as it'll be harder to discuss and harder for some members (like me

) to get into I think.

This sounds very interesting! I would not mind being a part of it, when the details are all worked out.
Because all I've been reading lately is Harry Potter books that I've already read a thousand times. XD

I would be interested in it, but I read much too slowly to ever participate.
I would love to read the recommendations of other people. So, I may not be up to participating, but I would love to read the reviews and suggestions of other people. I am always up for finding new and good books.

I'm in. I'd have a reason (outside of class) to start reading again. It's been ages since I've picked up a book (World War Z was the last one I read. Before that was Kafka on the Shore, and that was about a year ago).
Good idea. =D

I would gladly join the book club, but to get the book in time, can be difficult for me. I have experience that it could take up to a month to recieve a book

Well I see we got quite a few people interested in this. Any ideas for the first months book?
I'm thinking we can go with a fantasy book. I'm sure I'm willing to reread "Magician" by Raymond Fiest.
I'm also thinking Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson would be a good idea.
Not sure what else to recommend. Anyone else got ideas?

At some point I'd like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clark to be read. It's a fiction novel and it is a bit long (don't know how fast everyone reads and whatnot), but that'd be one I'd definitely read through again. Don't have any other suggestions though. I'm up for whatever. =).

Just as a question+suggestion thing, are we going to make new topics for each month for discussion? If we are, I think you should choose the first book and the first genre, and then when you start up the topic do you think it would be weird to have a poll for readers to choose next month's genre?
Plus, I also would hope there would be variety every month in the genres as well, where we don't repeat two genres consecutively.

I'd suggest "Beloved" by Tony Morrison. I'm about to start reading it so it would also be convenient for me if it gets chosen.

Ughh I read that in high school, don't like Morrison's style. Her works remind me too much of the nit-picking and gritty reading I had to do in high school, when I had to analyze the sh*t out of books instead of enjoy them.
We should definitely start this, I would absolutely love contributing.

Tony, shouldn't this be pinned? If it ever takes off, I mean.
Anyway, some recommendations:
Nightwatch, by Sergei Lukyanenko
Slaughterhouse Five, by Kurt Vonnegut
Any of Terry Goodkind's books (if people are into fantasy).
To be honest, I'm not entirely picky when it comes to books, as long as they aren't those trashy romance ones. A friend of mine goes through one of those a day. Anyway, I'm open to reading whatever.

I don't mean to be bumping all these projects back to the front page of the sub-forum, but were we still going to do this? It's seemed to have garnered enough attention and enthusiasm from people, it'd be a shame to just let it slide away...>.>.

I think I was waiting for people to agree on a book. :x
I didn't mean for it to fade into obscurity as it, well, did.
If I were to start it, however, I think I'd want to wait until December to start it simply because Nano is coming up, and most of the writers and readers on the board are participating in it, myself included.
But if we were to do something tiny for the duration of October, I would say
Lunar Park by Bret Easton Ellis or
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson

Ah, good point about NaNo...I guess it would probably be best to wait until December then...I know some people said they'd need to know ahead of time on the books, so it'd probably be better not to do one for Oct. since it's already half-way through. >.>.
I'm really up for reading anything though, when it comes down to deciding which book to read.
