Good news for all those folks who've yet to decide on what type of PS3 to buy. Over at Sony's E3 press conference, the company has announced that they're coming out with an 80GB PS3 "Core Pack" that'll sell for US$ 399.99. As Jack Tretton put it, it would have "the same functionality of the 40GB... with twice the storage."

The 80GB Core Pack is scheduled for release in September. From the looks of things there won't be a game in the bundle, but a DualShock 3 might be in the package as seen from a shot of the packaging at the event.

So the 80 GB version will basically just replace the 40 GB version.
Good news for those who haven't gotten their PS3 yet.

It was expecting. Another 100 dollars off should make even more people interested in buying the system. I could have waited for this price drop, but I likely won't have had the money for the system. Plus, when I bought for 500 back in January, I did get to play all my PS2 games up-scaled on my HDTV.

400 is still expensive, but it's affordable. If you're working at least and not bogged down by a large number of bills.

Doesn't the 40GB (and thus this one) not have PS2 disc backward compatibility though? I'd want to get a PS3 that does have it, for when my PS2 passes beyond the void. Which was the PS3 that has the backward compatibility?

The 40 GB and this new 80 GB version don't have PS2 backwards compatibility. Every other model does. Although some better than others. They started using software emulation instead of a chip. I think the only one that has the chip is the 60 GB version.

I'd REALLY want to have PS2 and PSone backwards compatibility, to be honest.
But beggars can't be choosers really.

I'll probably wind up caving and purchasing one of these eventually, I just wish they'd get some actual games. Especially without backwards compatibility (and upscaling wink.gif), the library grows less and less, despite some promising titles on the horizon.

this is stupid.. its the exact same as the crappy 40gb one but with 40gb more storage.. WOW!!! i wonder if it still has only 2 craptastic USB ports instead of 4.

lame move

They should have just dropped the 40GB to $350. That would probably garner a lot more sales. People weren't buying the 80GB versions for the memory, but for the BC emulation or the inclusion of MGS4. Still it's definitely better to get more memory for the same price.

Come on Sony what are you playing at? Voyou has voiced my sentiment on this one exactly. I actually had a glimmer of hope that something good would have come out of those rumours regarding a new model - and this is what we get. Ah well will just have to carry on holding my breath for a model with backward capabilities that a little bit more in my price range.

the main problem with the 40GB system was that it has no BC and only 2 USB ports. HD space has never been the issues since sony made it so easy for a customer to just slap in a bigger HD, so this move to me makes no sense whatsoever.

and on the subject of HD space, if you wanted to make this move, why not WoW us with a 120 GB HD or hey, a 160GB or MORe!!!!
