Have you ever fought any foe in Final Fantasy that was just so frightening or traumatizing or just WEIRD, that you just can't help but be slightly affected by it? D: It sounds like a kind of nub concept to be "frightened" by a battle, but I'm sure you all have had at least one that affected you no? @___@

From a Final Fantasy Game? erm... nope... Shadow Hearts maybe... but not Final Fantasy. I guess the only time was going against Demon Wall in FFVII... What really disturbed me was seeing the four digit numbers come up on the screen for the first time. This was my first RPG, and Aerith was my worst character so seeing this monstrosity appear out of the wall (it's a great monster design) and then drop a rock on Aerith's head, producing more numbers then she could possibly handle was a real opener.
Hojo's forms were odd, but out of the whole series, nothing springs to mind...

A random Apple Topic Strikes again! *gasp*
LOLS, I
knowww. :D Whatever brings in some discussion.
To be honest, the only reason why I even thought of this topic was because I was going up against some tonberries in FF:Tactics A2. :\
For some reason I am completely frightened to death by tonberries. There's something eerie about the way they hold their knives, and how they wear those cloaks.....and their yellow eyes and green skin.... D: D: D: It's not secret, I seize up everytime I had to fight against a Tonberry. I think it was FFviii, or one of the later ones where if you fight a certain number of tonberries, the king comes out. dfjk;lsjf;lajsj I think I had nightmares that night from the army of tonberries I had to pick off.

DOINK!
Really? The only thing I find unsettling about Tonberrys are their seal-like tails. I guess they are creepy with their torches and tendency to stab.
What were up with the penguins in FFVII? Someone at square obviously liked to see penguins explode, quite perplexing. Thinking about it, the giant slug in the monster arena in FFX was another odd design... still nothing too frightening though... I think you're the only one frightened by Tonberrys Apple... I thought they were portrayed as being 'cute' in later games.

FFVIII I think. The scariest thing about them was when they take those little steps towards you... Closer and closer and you dreaded what would happen if they actually got to you... *mwahaha*

Tonberries rock! Especially when summoned in FF VIII. That dual shock technology is going all out at their animation, really funny =D.
And frightened in a FF game? Hmm, nope.

I did. When each time I encounted "Marlboro" without Hero or Holy Wall. I'll go "OH NOOO!!!!!!" CRAP! Then the next thing is I go all T-T when I see 2 words "Bad Breath" Appears on the screen.
Tonberries is cute btw =)

most annoying battles go to Malboros, hands down.

~FFIX spoilers~
The rather hard battles when Zidane goes emo at the end of disc 3 in Terra. I wasn't frightened, but I got completely worked up by the story and was so nervous to lose any of the battles. The music kinda got to me as well. The moment I reached the first savepoint Moogle afterwards, I quickly saved and stopped playing for a moment: my hands were shaking really bad. It sure as hell affected me. xD
(One of the best FF scenes in general, imo)

For some reason I remember some Final Fantasy XII monsters to be vaguely frightening. Especially because they can chase you around. I can't remember what ones exactly, but the concept of swarms of monsters chasing me I remember to be kinda exhilirating.

Tonberries always frightened me in the beginning of the game, but after I knew I could actually kill one, I was fine after.
In FF XII, there were a couple of monsters that always got to me. One was the werewolf based monsters. Running into Ozmone Plain and just getting bitch slapped to death by 4 to 5 of them scared the ##### out of me the first time...
Also the rare Aeronite on Ozmone plain. Although weaker, it just kind of appeared when I was fighting another rare monster and I was freaking out because I was not expecting having to fight 2 rares at once...
Outside of those 2 moments, the only other monster that ever got to me was the dead dragon under Bevelle in FFX. It just kinda appeared and I was like, "WTf!? No! Where did you come from!?"

The Ruby weapon in Final Fantasy VII, and thinking I could take it down with that low level at the beginning of disk 2, and then it killed me in no time at all. The time that it takes to kill him is frightening too.

Only when I have one character left conscious that has a combination of sap and disease that is running for their life to a save point while trying to not get felled by a mob of monsters from behind. =/
(speaking of FFXII)
I don’t really find any of the monsters to be particularly startling or anything, though I do have to hand it to those Marlboro’s (on the Phon Coast and Golmore Jungle especially) for being one of the only monsters to give me such a heart-wrenching time. D=. They aren’t so bad now that I can swipe them out with one hit, but when I was first going through those places, they were beasts...So yeah, I’m in agreement with everyone else on the annoyance that is the Marlboro.

The weapons in FFvii were horrifying for me also, although for some reason not nearly as frightening as tonberries. .__.
I remember seeing Emerald Weapon, without really knowing it was Emerald Weapon since I had never encountered it before, and I tried to steer clear of it but accidentally initiated battle. D: And it was so scary with the timer counting down from 20 mins and ughhhh. I think I was going to wet myself from the adrenaline.

Haha, great topic Apple, I wasn't expecting something like this.
Actually my first and only real scary experiences in FF battles were the malboro and the tonberry. But much more the tonberry. I mean, malboro sucks ass with its infamous bad breath. But with the tonberry you don't really expect much out of the thing. Of course, its an infamous monster now, but when I played my first FF for the first time...it was mortifying. I see a sole tonberry come out and I think, "Ha, cute little thing. Too bad I have to kill it." I attack it, it does nothing but walks forward a little bit, slightly ominous. I'm thinking that it'll HAVE to die soon. Then it suddenly uses its chef knife and does like double the max HP I have on my best guy. That is the true terrifying thing, first meeting a tonberry, thinking its cute, and grossly underestimating its silent power.
But with a boss, in FFVIII when I first fought the propogators. They were kind of scary in an alien kind of way. Plus I didn't know what I was doing during that part of the game and Rinoa was like lvl 13 *zombie face*. I kept managing to kill it but then I'd go back and it would show up again. I kept killing them for like forty five minutes and I couldn't understand. That was awful. XD

For me, the only battle that came close to being "frightening" was in FF VII, and my first round with Emerald. I was nee to the whole RPG thing, I'd done most of the game fine, and all of a sudden I bump into this green thing while floating around in the sub and it destroyed them in one move.
Chyeah, I was like all, WOAH!

Ultima from FF VIII. I had to reload the game some 10 times and still defeated it by chance. Toughest boss. I had the Lionheart and got the limit break at the last moment.

Yu Yevon (FFX).
Why? Because it was the biggest battle letdown EVER!!!
Not only FF, all RPGs!
After Zetch and the Summons, you'd expect a really badass final boss!!
