One of the not-so-cosmetic changes in the fall update will be the ability to let you play your games directly from the hard disk. The new feature will let users install all of the game content directly onto the hard drive to improve game load times. Microsoft reports that it has seen a 30 percent improvement in load times in internal testing. As an interesting data point, Microsoft went out of its way to tell a group of reporters that the full Devil May Cry 4 hard disk installation took roughly 10 minutes on the Xbox 360. The installation took twice as long when we conducted our own installation tests on the PlayStation 3. Another side benefit of having games installed on the hard disk is reduced noise, since the optical disc no longer needs to spin up. However, you will still need to have the game disc in your optical drive while you're playing it, presumably as a piracy check.

i remember all the 360 fanboys on sites making fun of this when the ps3 had these options and now here goes microsoft doing the same.
its a good option though as it really improves load times and such.. good move

The problem has always been that they are not optional, but mandatory on some PS3 games ( it also seems to be becoming the standard). For instance if you delete the install on the PS3 and feel like showing off the game to a friend or you want a quick go at it, you would have to re-install the game. If it's optional you can just pop it in and you're good to go. It has to be optional since the Core users can't do this. It's also good for me since my 20GB drive now only has like 6 gigs left and I've deleted all the demos and movie clips. I might get a bigger drive down the line, but those things are way to expensive at the moment.

I thinks its sweet. Ill have to get a larger hd for sure. I never knew that the ps3 had game install till late. It seems to work for them, so it should be deadly here.

TEN MINUTES FOR ONLY A 30% DROP IN LOAD TIMES? WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH TEN MINUTES?!?!?!
Groovy.
Real shame that there's no way to use any HD on the 360... I guess the 60GB would be good enough but I think in a couple more years people may be wanting more space. I know I'll be having to upgrade my PS3 one soon enough and even though this is optional on the 360 I'd probably want to do it with all my games when I get one here in the next couple months.
This is a good feature though. One that should be included from here on out on consoles.

Awesome. It's a feature I always agreed with, and one of the things I liked about PS3. It's something that's nothing but beneficial as long as it stays at least somewhat optional, as Lunar mentioned. lol I hope it would kill the loading times in Sonic the Hedgehog, since I had a lot of fun with that game but couldn't stand the ridiculous amount of time spent on loading screens. I'd go back and play that one if this feature would help. And it's good to know future titles are less likely to have those issues.

You're lucky. I had less than a gig before I uninstalled Ninja Gaiden Black, which takes up 8 gigs alone. I also had FFXI on my HDD a while back. That wook up a lot as well. I needed at least 11 free gigs just for that one game. 20GB just doesnt cut it these days I guess... with all of the content available for XBL users.

I really think both Sony and Microsoft need to come out with at least a 150gb model. With games being able to be installed, downloaded, and all the other crap you can get on the networks I think it's unfair that there's such limited space.

Well atleast with Sony you dont need a 150GB model, just upgrade the HD yourself
though it should be cheap for Sony or Microsoft to slap a bigger HD into a machine for us, they are not that expensive.
Come on Sony, 320GB model, DO IT

Always good with more options to reduce loading times. Grab a sanswich or something while it instals, and then enjoy the game with less interruptions. I like this.

Actually I remember you complaining about this feature for PS3 a few times, not just for those cases it was mandatory.
I think you said something along these lines. "It takes 10 minutes to install, but with the 5-7% decreased loading times, you lose more time installing than you would if you didn't."

For a 5-7% decrease in load times I doubt it would even be noticeable if you installed (instead of waiting 60 seconds you wait 55.8 seconds). Are you arguing against optional installs? I'm not a big fan of installs in any fashion (the disk drives should be faster), but I especially don't like mandatory installs on consoles. I do admit that some games need it (I'm looking at you Mass Effect), but they are still playable without having to install. I doubt I'll be using this feature any time soon since I don't want to go out and spend $180 on additional storage space.

Installs are the way to go. Next gen consoles should have lots of storage and have full installs for all games that take full advantage of an install. I think more loading time should be able to be shaved off and performance increased.
