1up's Top 5 List
  • Do you agree with their list?
  • Do you disagree with the list?
  • What would be your top 5 disappointing games?

I don't think I have a top 5 of most disappointing sequels, but MGS 2 surely was a disappointing continuation for me. Not right after I played it, but after I let everything sink in, it felt like the gameplay was brilliant, but the rest mostly left a bad taste.
As for Chrono Cross, I honestly don't remember if I felt disappointed in the game or not. I didn't think it was as good as Chrono Trigger, but I don't think I was disappointed in C.C. Perhaps in the lack of dual and triple techs in that case.
Although I was disappointed in what happened to the original CT cast in the game. I didn't expect them to have any roles in the game, but I thought what happened to them was a bit too drastic to do off screen.

Devil May Cry 2 has to be one of the most disappointing sequels I've played though. The only good things about the game was the skyscraper/helicopter boss stage, that Trish played like DMC1 Dante, and the final boss ending scene.
Phisix
I would have thought Super Mario Bros 2 would be at number 1 considering that they copied Doki Doki's game mechanics and just added the Mario Characters.(Basically the whole game)

Do you have your own top 5 then?
cloudycat
I agree with Devil May Cry 2 but I also found DMC4 to be quite disappointing too, I preferred the third game. Deus Ex 2 was disappointing to an extent but it was still enjoyable I still found it better and less dumbed down than Bioshock in comparison to System Shock.

I suppose my disappointing sequels are:-

DMC 2 and 4
Breath Of Fire DQ I still liked it but I way preferred the old schoolers.
Xenosaga 2 after the first disc I couldn't wait to get it over and done with.
Splinter Cell 2 and 4 They weren't made by the original developers and it shows.
Soul Calibur 3 was my least favourite of the series.
Phisix
I'd have to agree with you about Breath of Fire V, I think it lets the Breath of Fire series down. I have not played Devil May Cry 4 yet so I cannot comment, but Devil May Cry 2 was awful, and the only redeeming feature was the battle system which was much better than the original Devil May Cry's battle system.
The Evil Dead
CC and MGS 2 being there are #######. They're both good games, regardless if you're bitter about CC not being CT 2 and MGS 2 having Raiden.

I can't really think of anything myself.
Grahf
Yeah, as much as I hated Raiden, MGS2 was still a really fun game, I definitely would take MGS2 off the list completely.
Pesmerga
I disagree with SMB2, CC and MGS2.

I know that SMB2 was a direct ripoff from Doki Doki, yet it was my very first game I finished, as well as the very first game I owned myself on the console I owned together with my younger brother.

Chrono Cross is a good game and only gets negative reviews for the same reasons Final Fantasy IX gets negative reviews. It is not like Chrono Trigger/Final Fantasy VII and thus people do not like it. CC was a great game with fantastic music.

MGS2, although my least favourite out of the three I have played wasn't a major disappointment to me. It was a good game in itself and I enjoyed playing the game.
AnimePaul
DMC4 was disappointing after DMC3. There was way too much back tracking in the second half of the game. Nero's Devil Bringer was great, but he didn't get any new weapons or firearms where as Dante gets all the cool ass weapons, but you have to back track through the same levels.

I absolutely do not agree with Chrono Cross being there at all. D: I really liked Chrono Trigger and all, but to be honest I really liked Chrono Cross more. The visuals were gorgeous, the music was ace, and although the character development for each and every character was a little shallow I still found them all very likable. Not only that but the recruiting system was fun, and I liked the battle system. :<

Although I wouldn't really have a top 5 disappointing sequels list myself lols. :D But I would say CC should not not not not be on there.

Super Mario Bros 2 was horrible to control, and felt weird. It looked and played nothing like Super Mario Bros. Which would be why it is Doki Doki with Mario characters. Officially Super Mario Bros 2 is not a game.
Valince
From that list, I've only played CC. Most people know how much I love CC. Even took the time to make a big post with my theories and understanding of the plot(which is long gone now, but I got it at another board). CC hate has been done to death and people need to get over it. Even if there is some inconsistancies in relation to CT's plot, big deal. It's a good game on its own.

Actually, it seems that Chrono Cross is being defended, which makes me happy cause I am also a big fan of the game. In fact, it was 0.5 point away from getting a perfect 10 from all three reviewers of EGM, so if they obviously loved it then how the hell can they call it a disappointment? Yes, I know a game can be good and disappointing, but how can it be that and nearly perfect?

MGS2, well, I understand why fans were very disappointed with that game. Lets face it, people wanted to play as Snake, and when Hideo took that away and gave us a rookie we never heard of until we played the game was doomed to create a scorn of angry fans. In terms of videogame history, it was definitely one of greatest stabs to the back of players. Granted, I still loved the game, and I even liked Raiden and accepted him as a rookie mixed up in predicament worse then he expected to get into.

MGS2 is a mixed bag for me. Gameplay wise it was great, MGS plays well but an update was needed and they delivered. I liked the plant levels, I think there was surprisingly a lot of variety (although the constant grey walls didn't excite). But Characters, boss fights, storyline, saving the game... it all brought it done... and these were what made MGS so great. So yeah, for me it was dissapointing, but only really when compared to MGS. The core gameplay was fantastic. I think it belongs on the list though.

BoF:Dragon Quarter is only dissapointing because it deviated so much from the BoF formula but personally I see it as a really great game, I only wish I would play more of it. It is a shame because I loved BoFIV to bits, the whole feel about it and the very traditional Asian influence. I guess change doesn't work for every franchise. Moving to Cyberpunk was the best move over for the FF series, but killed BoF... sad.gif

MGS 2's story plot hardly constitutes as a disappointing, it help set up the movie of MGS 4.
Though I have to agree on the verdict for DMC 2 and Deus Ex Machina: The Invisible War.

I played through it twice and did not like the setting aspect of BOF V, I did however like the form of cel shading they used for it and if they stuck to the basic turn based Breath of fire Style with that and out in a huge world, BOF V would have been great.

I would love more than anything for there to be a Breath of fire VI, do you think after the failure of V that they would discontinue making more BOF's?
Flame
I still think BoF has a market, probably moreso in Japan but I don't see BoFVI being an impossibility, however it's unlikely because of the how badly Dragon Quater failed.

I liked the battle system, it was something new, but it was heavily flawed and became repetitive. I applaud the company for trying something new and with a lot of tweaking it could have been legendary. If there was a BoFVI (Or maybe they'll forget dragon quarter and do a REAL breath of Fire V) would still like them to deviate at least a little from the traditional BoF style battle system.

I would love to see BoFIV remade happy.gif

You guys are on crack. Bof:DQ was an excellent, fun, challenging game and one of those rare rpgs which had a whole lot of replay value that didn't involve going back through the same 40 odd hours of gameplay. If we're talknig sales then unfortunately it was a failure, but the game imo was superb, unique and one of the top rpgs on the PS2 by far just for the balls they had to make such a different game. Maybe putting the Breath of fire name on it wasn't the best move in hindsight, but I loved it. And this is coming from someone who LOVED the fourth one for all the opposite reasons; traiditional gameplay, a completely different look etc; two extremely different but excellent games. DQ did not disappoint me. It shocked me, and in a good way. I felt a bit questiong at first, but when I got into it, I REALLY got into it.

I think when Capcom feel like coming back to it nd doing an rpg, they'll bring the series back. Maybe it'll be something entirely different, maybe it'll be more in line with the previous entries, but I'd love to see what that team could come up with again. On the note of a remake of IV...mmmm. I don't know. Maybe clean up the graphics and shorten the load times, but I'd be scared the game would lose its charm in a remake, it has a very specific special aura about it for me.

Rant over XD.

A bit too early for a reamke of IV. It still looks good enough today, especially since I replayed it last year. A brand new adventure would be the best option.

Xenosaga 2 is such a let down.
I'm probably one of the only people that actually liked not being the Snake the whole time, while yes I liked MGS1 and 3 better; I didn't hate the change to Raiden.

FFX-2 now that was weak sequel, it was lighthearted and the dressphere concept is kind of a cool idea, but the game storyline and most everything was very lacking.

Chrono Cross doesn't belong there at all, though I will say in some regards it shouldn't have the Chrono title on it, due to you not really traversing time, but really different worlds and the fact that it's really its own video game separate from CT for the most part.
