I still haven't played any Sonic games yet (been meaning to pick up the Mega Collection for PS2 or whatever it was called), but I'm not sure how well this one will bode. Somehow I just don't see Sonic romping around wielding a sword, but whatever...

After that sexy Nintendo Power cover (check it out again after the break) and a pretty legit-sounding scenario, Sonic and the Black Knight is now confirmed as a Wii-exclusive title. Some guy on the official SEGA message boards "confirmed" it was real, but offered no details beyond waiting for the official page on sega.com. So, like the genius detectives we are, a short investigation of the official page turned up this information.

The game takes place in a "storybook world of Arthurian legend," with Sonic wielding a sword to do battle with various ne'er-do-wells in medieval times. Not much else is explained beyond that, but we'll keep you posted on any updates to the official page. Stick around and Sonic will thank you.

A picture of sonic wielding a sword thicker than his own arms and a ridiculous gauntlet cause facepalms. Naturally, this magazine cover also induces facepalms for me.

Anyone remember when Sonic wasn't involved in some overly complex but still shallow anime storyline?
Ken Masters
I'm sorry but Sega....

Reminds me of Shadow the Hedgehog. Sonic is to swords as Shadow is to guns apparently... and I'm expecting basically the same generic style gameplay with some clunky motion controls to completely murder it. But we'll see.
LunarMaster
There is only one way this game would work, and that is if and only if it's an RPG. Since this is Sega and Sonic, my guess is it won't be.
Athrun
Sonic, what have they done to you?

First Sonic the Warewolf (yeah, that's a real picture) and now Sonic the black knight?
How about fixing Sonic the Hedgehog first before trying out new things? They promised a Sonic game true to the old and good quality of Sonic games, and they need to deliver that first to gain back some of the trust they lost to their fans.

This is seriously ##### with my mind.

Sonic.
On the cover of Nintendo Power.
With a sword and a gauntlet.

My god. My childhood is just ruined...forever. Dear lord.
I mean...Its getting me into strange thoughts about how the only REAL sonic fans existent nowadays are either furries or...well basically just furries.
Take me baaack sonic, make me feel safe!!

Mental Note to the helplessly oblivious : The above post is not serious. I think this is a load of crap. Much like most sonic games

QUOTE (gamekyo)
- Developed by the same team as Sonic and the Secret Rings

- "This time, a sorceress named Merlina summons Sonic to the mythical realm of King Arthur, but it seems the fabled monarch has somehow been corrupted and now rules the land as the tyranical Black Knight."

- "Uses a similar storybook device as Sonic and the Secret Rings."

- "As Sonic runs along, a simple flick of the Wii remote will execute a basic slash, which is enough to dispatch most low-level grunts."

- "More advanced swordplay consists of the ability to thrust, parry, and even pull off a buzz-saw maneuver midjump."

- "During out demo, we saw the hedgehog leap from a high precipice, then thrust the blade into a wall to slow his decent, sparks flying impressivly as steel cut through brick."

- "Combat is integrated in such a way that most of the time you can slice through any who stand in your path without even slowing down."

- "Sonic is controlled with the Control Stick."

- "Our hero begins his quest as a mere knave. Only by becoming a full-fledged knight will he have any hope of defeating King Arthur."

- "his sword, a talking blade named Calibur, serves as a mentor."

- "If you help civilian townfolk in need of assistance, you'll earn points toward knighthood. If you smite one of those civilians, your reputation will take a hit."

- "At the end of each stage, the game tallies your good and not-so-good deeds and updates your rank accordingly."

- "Sonic can aquire everything from gauntlets to magical tomes to new swords, and when equipped, each article bestows him with a unique benefit."

- "On the audio side, veteran composer Jen Senoue is taking a smiliar approach, injecting familiar Sonic themes with a Celtic flavor."

- "Each stage has multiple branching paths and searching for townsfolk and treasure chests provides an element of exploration that recalls Sonic's early Genesis days."

- "The camera will occasionally pan to a side-scrolling perspective for a quick dose of classic 2-D action."

- "And there will be no dinosaur eggs!"

- "You will be able to play through game as Sonic, or switch to the other characters if you choose."

- "Just as they subbed in for such characters as Ali Baba and Aladdin in Sonic and the Secret Rings, a number of familiar faces will assume Arthurian personas in SBK."

- "This time, however, some of Sonic's friends will be playable. Each hero will boast unique abilities, and though the team isn't ready to divulge the full cast just yet, we do know the identities of two playable comrades: Knuckles, who brandishes two swords at once, and Shadow."

- "a new special guage will bestow him with similarly impressive powers. The meter fills gradually whenever Sonic vanquishes an enemy or snags a purple elemental, and when it reaches a certain point you can unleash a powerful combination attack capable of tearing through multiple foes in quick succession. You simply press the B button to lock onto the nearest enemy, flick the remote to strike him down, then press B again to move onto the next unfortunate soul. If you chain together enough smitings before the guage is depleted, Sonic will receive a speed burst at the end of the string."

- "the team behind Sonic and the Black Knight is keenly aware of the franchise's past missteps, and their enthusiasm for doing right by the series is infections."

The gameplay aspect of Sonic Unleashed is what we want and it is fast paced and what not, but I am not too sure about Sonic the Wear-hedgehog. Stick to the DS Sonic games if you want what we used to have back in the day.

Sonic and the Black Knight looks and sounds gay. These type of games ad gameplay are not meant for Sonic, and Sonic will soon be destroyed.
Grahf
If Sonic is voiced by Nicholas Cage in this game, the atmosphere will be absolutely perfect.
Mushroom
Yup, i'll be sticking with the DS games. They seem to fail over and over to bring what makes sonic cool into a 3-D game, and stupid gimmicks like this and the ware-hog isn't going to work.
