(I suppose this could have gone in Q/A as well, but I figured that since this is more specifically to do with “Sony’s consoles”, I’ll just put it in here. Hope that’s fine.).

For the past week (and actually a little before as well), I’ve been having problems getting my family’s PS2 to read discs. It usually takes a couple whacks for it to get spinning (among a variety of less violent things. =p.), otherwise it just doesn’t work at all.

Is the motor shot and do I just need a new one (or...a PS3. =o .)? Or is there something else I can do to get it running? My family has had it for maybe four years (one of my brothers thought we’ve had it for longer, maybe six years, but I honestly don’t remember. I think four is a generally accurate guess.). PS2s are supposed to have at least a ten-year life span, so it’s a bummer if this one is dead/dying already.

Any input on the matter is appreciated. =).

Get the new PS2 to replace yours, it's no too expensive anymore. You can try opening your old one, but I don't see what good would that do unless you know people who can help refurbish you're Ps2.

Yeah...I’m not really into the whole shipping-off-my-console-to-get-it-fixed thing, because it in itself would cost too much...I guess I (or someone in my family) will just go buy a new one. They’re selling for around $130, which isn’t too bad at all. Oh well...

Thanks for the reply, Soul Taker. =).

Oh, it's nowhere near that long. If you're referring to Sony's press conference about the 10 year life span, it only meant that the system will have games released for it over a span of 10 years.
A PS2 generally lasts about 4 - 5 years for most people before it starts acting up, one way or another. But this is probably dependent on the amount of use, and if you keep it clean, etc.

I haven't heard of anyones motor stopping. Not sure what it would cost to replace it. I know that replacing the lens is expensive, and costs about the same as a new PS2. The motor is probably cheaper, if it's a simple problem. But I don't know of any other solutions than to get it fixed by a professional.

DB you could try asking a a computer tech person to see if there are any parts compatible with the PS2 to replace the motor if that's the only problem. Though like what Hiks said, if it's the lens just get a new one.

I think it's more a case of bad luck than anything else. I've used my PS2 to death and I've had it for nearly eight years. I'd be pretty p!ssed off paying £300 for something to only last 4-5 years and a buddy of mine has had his for almost as long so it's not that unusual.

As for your PS2 it definitely sounds like the job would probably cost more than the console is worth especially nowadays. I'd be in the market for a new one if I was you either that or hold your cash back and save for a PS3 depends how long can save for and/or how long you can go without a gaming system.

Oh...Must have misread that then. But it’s reassuring to know my family’s PS2 has lasted the estimated “live time”. =).

Well, the brother that told me that the motor died is a computer tech-ish person (went to college for it, but not sure it did him any good. I mean, he’s built computers and sold them at garage sales and whatever, but...still. >.o.). He’s seemed to be leaning towards getting a new console entirely, so I’m not sure if I can get any of the parts fixed (and if it costs the same as getting a new PS2 or even more, I’d just as soon get the new PS2.). I dunno. It still runs and everything when I turn it on, it’s just that the discs don’t spin and we have to try loads of things to try and get them to (most times doesn’t work).

I’ll give it another whirl later. It may just be a special ed console (works, but takes a while to get it to). My current PS1 is of the same edition (freezes like no other). >.o. I’ll ask my brother about just getting parts replaced and we’ll see if it’s worth getting replacement parts or just getting a new system...

Edit:

@Cloudy: I’m thinking of a PS3 too, but I’d still get a PS2 just because it’d be way too expensive to try getting a 60GB that has backward compatibility...

Yeah. I think I’m just going to go invest in the new PS2...

Thanks for all of the replies. I appreciate it. =).
