http://www2.kerrang.com/2008/07/emo_and_go...ade_illega.htmlThe Russian government is in the process of drafting a law to make emo and goth music illegal.
Last month a parliamentary committee was convened to discuss a draft proposal of the Russian government's Government Strategy In The Sphere Of Spiritual And Ethical Education bill, the details of which were leaked to The Moscow Times. The newspaper subsequently reported that, among other things, the draft bill dubbed the musical movements a "dangerous teen trend" and called for emo and goth websites to be regulated and young people dressing like emos or goths to be banned from entering schools and government buildings.
The newspaper interviewed one of the bill's authors, Igor Ponkin from the Russian Interior Ministry's Public Oversight Council. Ponkin called emo a "social danger" and "a threat to national stability" and said the bill is a reaction to teen suicides such as the tragic death of British teenager
Hannah Bond.
"This type of behaviour is a crucial part of emo ideology," said Ponkin. "Of course there are emo teens who just listen to their music. But our actions are not directed at them but rather at those who also hurt themselves, commit suicide and promote those acts."
The Moscow Times also interviewed psychologist Inna Cherkova who said:
"Suicide is not a symptom of emo culture. I work with other teens too, and every group has emotionally troubled kids."
However, the bill is expected to become law in Russia before the end of the year.

So depressed teens who dress in black are going to be hit with the law! Good stuff =/ A parliamentary committee came up with this?
I'm a firm believer that fashion sense and music taste are not a potent ingredient for self-harm or suicide. This is really and truly ridiculous.

And if you had paid attention to the article, you would have seen where it was stated that this is not for people who just feel like dressing like that or like the music.
"This type of behaviour is a crucial part of emo ideology," said Ponkin. "Of course there are emo teens who just listen to their music. But our actions are not directed at them but rather at those who also hurt themselves, commit suicide and promote those acts."
That aside, this is still pretty stupid. But so are people who follow the trend of the month, so I don't really care.

They're relating a choice of fashion sense and music taste to suicide.

Whether or not it is being directed at them, the ones who don't harm themselves will still be affected because they apparenly listen to the same music and dress the same o.0

Well I think she means that even those who don't hurt themselves won't be allowed to enter schools because of how they dress.

If someone cares about getting an education, I really don't think they'll have much objection to wearing something different for some hours a day. It's like not being able to dress like a goth or whatever at work.

That and also how they're making 2 genres of music illegal.
Will it be a $200 fine for every Marilyn Manson song on your computer? A $1000 fine for owning a MCR album? Just because you
might want to commit suicide and/or harming yourself. Or will they take a look at your wrists first and if they're unscathed, lower the fine?
And I wonder if they will be able to differentiate between goth and emo fashion to other fashions like bogans and punks? I know a lot of people here have a hard time telling the difference.
It's kind of hard to imagine

Gotta love those governments. Always making stupid laws. You can't blame the music for what people do. It's not like the artists are saying slit your wrists. It all comes down to choice. Why do we always have to blame something else for our own mistakes? During Columbine they blamed Doom. When a kid slammed his young sibling and the kid died they blamed wrestling. It just really gets old after a while. But it is Russia so who cares. But still, they try to do things like that here in the US sometimes too. Hopefully some leaders here don't get inspiration from this.

Russia has such a severe minority of those groups, that you won't even hear an outcry, more like a squeak.
What they should be taking care of are the enormous amounts of fascist neo nazis who are going very public and attacking anyone who looks non Russian. That should be more of a focus on laws than outlawing #### music.

On the outside, this looks like the same thing as Utah trying to punish video game stores who sell "mature" games to minors by making it a class 3 felon (other class 3 felons: drug possession)
I think this is a good move because you can never underestimate the power of morons in large groups. It only takes one person to make a large group.
Also, the "Emo" thing is after my time spent in High Schools, and you don't get much of them in the ProvOrem (area where my university is) area here in Utah, so I don't really know how they really are. I think that they dress stupid anyway, so it should be outlawed in schools from what I understand because all black should be reserved for one thing: Halloween.
Also, (blatantly showing my ignorance...) who the crap is MCR???

Haha, I read this the other day, and was going to ask my Russian friend (a summer exchange student) what he thought of it.
Personally, I believe it is quite stupid to tell people that their style is now illegal, and they can't listen to this music nor that. Then again, they don't really have freedom of expression there like other countries, so..
How are they going to say who is dressed emo or goth? Some people use certain accesories, or meld it with another style to create their own. It is also hard to tell those styles from others. (Emo and Scene get mixed up all the time, for example)

I'd have actually said they're ignoring the things they should be doing rather than that they have nothing better to do.
Anyway, music isn't going to kill you. Morals do it for you pretty well in my opinion. And please don't take that statement as if I'm saying that I think anyone who listens to "emo" music or whatever have poor morals. Like I said, the music isn't going to do anything to you, it's the way you form your conscience.

Then to lower gang fights/gangsters/teen pregnancy they should ban Hip hop and rap music.
: D
This is a pretty stupid thing to do, in my opinion, kids who want attention cut themselves, the music has nothing to do with it. They think they're cool, or it 'relieves' their pain. As Dragon Brigade said, it's about the morals pretty much and such.
Nocinderella, scene is a type of fashion these days thats kind of like the emo fashion but not. Google/photobucket scene girl and you will see what they look like. o_O lotsa chicks on myspace do it. some of them look really cute though.

Very true. This happens in England as well. The lead singer of Panic! At The Disco got "bottled". He got hit by a coke bottle, filled with urine, on the head. It knocked him out for a little while, but he continued playing when he got up.
