*gasp* What a surprise! Johnny Depp possibly (= still rumor, though we know it'll probably happen. ...not that *I'm* complaining. >.o.) starring in yet another Tim Burton film?!

Anyway, I'm still looking forward to this, even if it fails in mass appeal. I've generally liked Tim Burton's stuff (that I've seen, which includes Big Fish, *coughsweeneytoddcough*, Edward Scissorhands, and the first two Batman movies he did (I admit I only sort of enjoy the first one with the Joker, didn't like the one with the Penguin).). So I haven't seen Planet of the Apes, or other horrendous flip-flops or whatever (though I suppose people would consider the other ones I've seen horrendous flip-flops. xD.).

Anyway.

UK, July 29, 2008 - Will Johnny Depp and Tim Burton re-team on the director's forthcoming Alice in Wonderland feature? Studio Disney is neither confirming nor denying his involvement, but online rumours are rife that the long-time friends will collaboorate on the 3-D feature.

What is known is that Burton has finally found his Alice and she's Mia Wasikowska, an up-and-coming actress from Australia.

Wasikowska has previously starred in TV shows All Saints and In Treatment and has just finished playing the young Amelia Earhart in the recently-wrapped biopic of the legendary aviator.

Linda Woolverton (The Lion King) has written the Alice script, which will be shot by combining live-action footage with performance-capture animation.

Alice in Wonderland is set to shoot in 2009 and we'll have more casting info, plus news on Depp's possible participation, as and when it breaks.

I do have one last personal question to ask though. What do they mean with performance-capture animation?

Anyway, discuss/bash/gush/whatever.
Phisix
Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter then. Still, a Tim Burtomn remake will be awesome.

Burton already ##### all over Charlie and The Chocolate Factory. I'm sick of his " style " and the fact that his movies are all lame and look exactly the same outside of Pee-Wee's Big Adventure.

This sounds terrible.

Agreed.

##### Tim Burton's movie. I'll wait patiently until American Mcgee's Alice finally get made.

I liked Edward Scissorhands and Big Fish, and I didn't think Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were so bad. Everything else of his that I saw was pretty horrible.

But eh, what the #####, why not? I just see everything that comes out anyway.

Depp is overcooked now, but I wont mind watching this. I remember Alice was my favourite story when I was around 6 or so and I wouldnt mind having this in live action. Although I would certainly enjoy having McGee's Alice brought to be Silver screen more than Burton's.
Hyoushitsu
Copy paste what TED said. Burton's stuff is overdone at this point, IMO. I don't think I've enjoyed a movie of his since Big Fish.

It'll still be interesting what he comes out with, as this seems like pretty obvious subject matter for him. Even if I don't like the final product, it should at least be amusing to watch.

I'm kind of one of those people who aren't that thrilled about Tim Burton's style. It's visually pleasing, but I have to say that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory made me want to hurl a little.

I'm looking more forward to Marilyn Manson's Phantasmagoria. I mean, I only really want to see how Lily Cole is as an actress, and I know Marilyn Manson is a little weird in the head, but I think that's why I'm looking forward to it more.

I remember reading about that. Looks interesting.

Alright, so I know I'm probably one of the only ones that care, but here's an update.

QUOTE
Anne Hathaway (Get Smart) and Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) have joined the cast of director Tim Burton's live-action and performance-capture retelling of Alice in Wonderland.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Hathaway is playing the White Queen, a benevolent monarch who is deposed and banished by her sister, the Red Queen (Carter), who has an affinity for crying out, 'Off with their heads!' The White Queen needs Alice to slay a creature known as the Bandersnatch."

Bonham Carter -- Burton's off-screen squeeze -- has appeared in his films Sweeney Todd, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish and Planet of the Apes.

The film stars Mia Wasikowska as Alice and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter.

That just sealed the deal for me. I'm going to go watch Hellllllennnnnna! shout "Off with their heads!" That's just perfect right there. Surprised to hear Hathaway's in it though. Haven't seen her in much, but I liked her in The Devil Wears Prada.
Theferrell
hmmmm, this'll be interesting... I'm down with watching this one. This could be really cool, or REALLY FRIGGIN CREEPY given the LSD nature of the Disney-version...
Dragon Brigade
Come to think of it, I've never seen the Disney version.

IMDB link

That's the only Alice in Wonderland I've ever seen, and I think I first saw it when I was...seven, I think. It kind of creeped me out, haha. Not that it was scary, but...it was rather odd I will say.

I'm getting rather irritated with the 'people' in the Hollywood movie area seemingly remaking or recreating what was good and just fine in the past. Whatever happened to being original, instead of rehashing classics? The Nightmare Before Christmas was original. Burton is getting on my nerves just a tad, I think he may be getting a little saturated, regrettably this is washing off on Depp as well, which is not so cool since he's a fantastic actor. I do feel Depp should step away from Pirates and Burton films for awhile though.

Hathaway is good though, I want to see her in Get Smart, despite 'Prada' being a comedy, she wasn't actually a funny one in it. So I'd like to see her personally do comedy. Nonetheless, she's a good actor for being relatively new in the game. Hard to say how this will do in theaters, probably fairly well. I can see it getting a lot of criticism from some fans though. It's already reminding of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, now we get to see Depp wearing another odd hat and acting like a crazy person. Again.

It sounds like I don't like Depp, he's probably one of my favorite actors. I'm just afraid it'll turn into a Charlie in the Chocolate Factory again, which I didn't like nearly as much as the original. This has real actors...acting, so I'd like to know exactly what performance-capturing filming is? Sin City with color? What? XD
LagunaWannabe
It'll be good I'm sure. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wasnt TERRIBLE. The only thing they need to be careful of, is overusing Johnny Depp's persona. He needs to do something new and interesting with a character. Know what i mean? Becuase soon it will get old, and it will not longer belike, "oh man what a great acting job", it'lls just be like, "Oh, Johnny Depp again"
Dragon Brigade
I saw some of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on tv, and I did think it was pretty bad. I'm still holding out hopes on this one though. It might flop, it might not, but I want to watch it (either in theaters or at home) first before I totally ride it off as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-esque.

I agree about most of what you said as far as Depp/Burton getting saturated (to use your way of putting it). I like seeing stuff from both of them (one is a favorite actor, the other a favorite director), but they seem to be getting in a rut. All I can do is hope for the best. xD.

As for the last question you had regarding film methods Exire, I have no idea, haha.

Edit: Laguna has it best, I think. It's the persona that is being used too much.
Exire
Well it can't all be placed on the actor. I think we may have forgotten about Sweeney Todd in between here. That was really great, one of my favorite roles Depp has done since Edward Scissorhands or Captain Jack Sparrow. And Depp has done all of his roles very differently. There isn't anything similar with Depp's Willy Wonka to his other characters. They are all extremely different. I just felt that movie was a particular slump for the Depp-Burton duo, while Sweeney Todd was a big high. Maybe it's my Batman fandom, I'm still rebuilding my trust from Batman haha. He still sat in on the later movies involving Robin and *vomits* Batgirl. Dear God, I would have rather shot myself. And George Clooney as Batman? He's a great actor but...hurgh.

Anyway, shutting up now. XD
Dragon Brigade
I saw Sweeney Todd and thought Depp did a good job with that, definitely different. But, to me, he does seem to come off as being same-ish recently (though I think that is mostly because some of the roles are similar; ie: psychotic people in some fashion). All of his characters *are* distinguishably different, but sometimes it just seems like it's more of the same. I think, for me, it's mostly when people seem to be in *every* movie that you just get used to seeing them. I don't quite know how to explain it. >.>. Never mind. I'm babbling nonsensically. D=. What I mean is, I think he's a good actor and can definitely do this role, but it sort of seems...typical Tim Burton casting. I mean, beyond the fact that Depp's in just about every movie Burton makes (not that I have a problem with that, I like them both), but for some reason when you stick Depp + Burton together, it just gives that...I dunno. /ramble.

As for the Batman, I thought Burton had Michael Keaton?

...Actually, I'm sort of getting confused in this topic now. Oh dear.
LagunaWannabe
Some of their stuff comes out really well. I know I enjoyed The Corpse Bride and Sweeney Todd and can't forget!!!! They also did the Headless Horseman movie which I thought rocked.

So i mean, its definitely doable, as long as they dont overplay Depp.
Sarc Griffinheart
I guess this one could go either way - it could be really bad, or really good. I'll probably end up going to see it anyway; since my sister will want to watch it. I enjoyed Nightmare Before Christmas.
Kronik
Really you guys liked Sweeney Todd? I couldn't stand it really. I mean Alan Rickman really lightened up the whole movie for me. But bam. Guy gets killed his first few minutes on the screen. I really felt that Depp's role was a pretentious reprise and desperate attempt at his younger acting style and that his singing was also a preemptive strike to cover that motive. It felt fake to me really, it didn't feel like he was being Sweeney Todd it felt like he was trying to be his young Deppy self. BUT HE'S 45 YEARS OLD. To me Helena Carter stole the show and the limelight.

Amen! She's the main reason I wanted to see it, personally. Depp didn't do bad in it, but I really thought Helena was superb.

The mad hatter isn't exactly what I'd call a starring role... But anywho.
Yeah I mentioned this in the lone ranger thread I think a while back.
<.<
Doesn't surprise me.

Director wants Alice engaging and psychological

Just a little blurb basically saying why he wants to make his own version of Alice. Pretty interesting what he thought of the past ones though. I can actually kind of agree with him though (and I don't say this just because I'm overly obsessed with Helena Bonham Carter and then as a biased Tim-Burton-movie fan. xD.). I remember when I saw the Nick Willing 1998 version, I thought it was really strange, but at the same time I didn't feel much connection with it. It was just sort of...strange.

Bah, the bastard is doing an American Mcgee's Alive rip-off. EVEN THOUGH MARILYN MANSON IS WORKING ON THE SAME DAMN MOVIE.
