If you guys ever head out to concerts, does it matter who's opening for the main event? And do you guys ever get hit by a particularly great opener and suddenly decide to check them out further?
The Evil Dead
Openers have no effect on the headlining band, and I've suffered because of it. I've seen 6 In Flames shows so far and I've gone to shows that have outstanding support acts that really compliment In Flames ( Soilwork, Evergrey ) to really #### music that doesn't belong at the show ( Job for a Cowboy, Mudvayne, Throwdown ). It's always worth it though for the main band, because that's why you're there, right? smile.gif

I really can't say I've been to many shows where I already didn't know the opening band at all, I know too much metal. Can't think of any that have made me really want to check them out further even if I did hear their tunes before.

I likes this topic. Concerts are badass.

I think the only opening... Wait, that was the show that the main band never showed up at... I forget if they were opening or replacing the main band, but the only extra I ever really checked out much was Bullets and Octane, I think. They were really out of place at a punk show, but after getting over that, I noticed they had some catchy tunes, so I gave 'em a shot later on, and came to like their music.

Otherwise, any opening bands I ever checked out at shows were usually from various local shows -- usually bands that were friends with Soul 4 Sale (who were usually an opening band, themselves -- I think they opened for The Misfits at least once). Let's see... the main ones that come to mind are makeoutmusic, You and What Army, and Buddha Heroes.

I used to go to a bunch of local punk shows with a friend or two back in the day, but other than those, I haven't really been to many concerts, and those I have been to, I haven't really paid much attention to the opening bands.

the few concerts I have been to i enjoyed the opening act, sometimes they ended up being better than the headliner..

For me, I always check the opening and do some research on them even if I'm much more of a fan of the main showstopper. For me, part of the money that I throw into the show should take the openers into account too. (Lols I'm so stingy.)

I've had a few good shows where the openers really surprised me with their talent though.

- Of Montreal : MGMT opened for them. This was before they were really big, so they were the first band to play and they were fantastic! I wasn't paying for part of the time since I was looking for a hot swede, but they were still so so sooo awesome.

- Dave Elkins of Mae : He was performing for free at my school, and tbh I wasn't really expecting him to be that great. He wasn't. However, The Envy Corps really stole the show for me, and I just HAD to download more.

Other shows I've seen tend to have good to mediocre openers, but usually they're bands I already know like The Brunettes opening for Beirut, or Flowers Forever opening for Lightspeed Champion.

I went to a New Found Glory a few years back, and the first band, Finch (SSSSSSSSSSSSUCKED!!!!!!!!) didn't do it for me. Something Corporate though (second band) was AWESOME!!!! They've been one of my favorite bands since. I also loved the main singer's solo project, Jack's Mannequin to death. The third band sucked big time too... but NFG was AMAZING!!!

Great job Something Corporate, I hope you still come out with good stuff.

It doesn't really matter as long as it is the same or a similar genre. I mostly don't go to listen to music as much as I go to have a good time.
