We all know there are some people out there, that zoom through books and can finish 900 paged book in a day. Whilst some people take upto a year to finish a book with 900 odd pages.

I was wondering how long does it generally take you to finish a book?

I generally like to take my time reading, so I can take upto a year finishing a long, thick book like the last couple of Harry Potter titles. Though, I also tend to read more than one book at the same time so I end up finishing them all almost at the same time.

If I'm hooked onto the story, then I can finish it within days but that doesn't really happen very often to me. The most recent book I finished within days was Breaking Dawn. That book was so addicting, I stayed up til 6am reading it which is why I finished it within the 2 days I got it. Though, for some people 2 days is considered quite a lot of time to read a book like that.

Then again, I don't like the idea of people trying to read a book in the shortest amount of time possible. I think it puts people off from enjoying the book(s) to its full content, that they just read what's on the page and not really think about it differently.

So, anyways...

Have you read any books that you couldn't put down, also?
What's the shortest amount of time you've read a (long) book?
(and I'm not talking about the thin, short story ones - anyone can finish one in a day, I mean the thick, oversized ones, if any)

when i cant put down a book and it has me that hooked, your looking at a week or two and i am done. Most of the Harry Potter books and the Rising Stars books i finished within that period. I dont usually read that often though and the longest it has prolly taken me on a book is a month. Usually i figure out in the first chapter if i want to continue or not and if i do continue, it usually means its right up my alley and i dont put it down until i am done.

When I get really into a book, I can usually kill a page in a minute. Sometimes it goes faster if the type is big like Harry Potter, and sometimes it could take me a little longer if the type is smaller but that's the best average I could go by.

This is pretty much the only reason why I usually only buy big books. .___. Mists of Avalon only took me about 8-9 days, and it was a book that was about 1k+ pages? If I'm going to buy a book, it must last me long enough to capture my attention and hold me there for more than a few days. Dx

School and misc. schedule must also be taken into consideration lols. <:D

It takes me two weeks to read a 300 page book. I read slowwww. It really is a bother when I want to finish books and read school books at the same time, I can't juggle it well.
Dragon Brigade
It entirely depends for me. If I don’t like them as much, they can take longer (weeks/months/years, because I won’t read as frequently and consistently put them down; or I'll just completely ride them off the list and not bother reading them in the first place.). Usually though, it takes me anytime between 1-4 days to read a book I’m really into.

Books that I couldn’t put down? Hmm...Well, anything that I like and I’m reading it for the first time, such as Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card or The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield. If it’s just a mediocre book, then I usually can live with letting it sit for larger increments...

I can usually read a book in a day or two, up to a month... same problem as DB.. Right now I'm reading Beyond Ragnarök, by Mickey Zucker Reichert... I hope I spelled that right, I cant stop reading until I'm too tired to continue.. It's pretty good.. not perfect.. I give it 7.9 out of 10...

For me, books are like movies, but better. I see the entire thing playing in my head. Any interruption is like pause.
I only stop to eat, and then I read and eat, and to sleep.
I've been accused of skimming, but I don't skim at all. I just read. Fast.
And I understand exactly what is going on, didn't miss a thing.

It isn't always a good thing though. I tend to go through books quite quickly, obviously, and can't spend a small fortune each month on books, so I reread quite a few things.

This is how I read too. I can finish any Harry Potter within a day, although I spent quite a few with the last Harry Potter one, because I didn't like it until near the ending so I dragged. Which I seldom do. Philosopher's Stone probably took three to four hours. Order of Phoenix took around nine to eleven hours, because I started in the morning and finished at around evening.

Usually I can finish a book in one day with hours to spare. Mm... the most accurate estimate is I can finish any one of the Tamora Pierce's Circle of Magic series or Artemis Fowl ones in two to three hours, rarely four. Any Dan Brown's four books, David Edding's Belgarion, Mallorean, Elenia, Tamuli and Dreamers series will take around three to five, rarely more than six. These are pretty easy reads though. Some of Anne Rice's books took longer, six to eight hours. Marius's book is definitely a bit more tedious. Interview with a Vampire was a shorter read. If I remember right... Lord of the Rings series took my three days. I was sorely tempted to skip through chunks of it. I think I might have, at some point of time, but I went backwards to get what I missed before proceeding.

Sometimes my first read-through is slower, sometimes my re-reading is slower. Depends on how hard I concentrate on the details, I guess. The only exception to my speedy reading is the Harry Potter's last book and the Wheel of Time series first three books (stopped somewhere in the middle of the third book).

David Edding's 'Regina's Song'. And the Dan Brown ones. Those type of books are difficult to put down.
